What a fantabulous contraption!

« on: March 30, 2013, 01:13:13 am »

I am going to start writing a book about a vigilante mutant slayer in a post-apocalyptic stempunkesque city. It may seem a bit distant from the genre of steampunk but believe me the vision I have is clearly steampunk. Anyway back to the matter at hand, I am having a great difficulty in creating a name for the book. I have had many ideas but none seem quite right. Any suggestions would be a great help. Thank you.

Without more knowledge of the plot, characters and setting it's a little difficult to come up with a relevant title other than something like Steampunk Vigilante Mutant-Slayer.

Sorry for the hasty post last time.

The main plot...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So as you can see the story has various aspects and a lot of events taking place it seems quite complex but it all runs smoothly. I am hoping for a single word title such as "Uprising" a title I've been playing around with and pondering. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

What is the name of the city? That seems to be the central location and hub of your story.

Rather than making one totally up, why don't you twist an existing name for a city and give it a dark twist?

My current idea for the city name is Drayton City or Harcourt City

Should I maybe use a suffix with the city name, such as "City name here Chronicles" or something similar

Harliken/Harlequin? (As in a disguise underneath which lies another character. This might work well with the concept of perfection vs mutation and the various levels of society and whether they truly represent those within them)

The city could be the Tiers of Harcourt, where each tier is given a name, e.g. Stone Tier to Iron Tier to Cloud Tier.

The book could be called Transformation (or something similar), giving reference to the rebellion and mutation and the effect on the protagonist (and others).

Somehow, Last Mutant Standing came to mind, but that's just a reaction...Wink Sometimes you can twist a quotation around, like...'Of the people, Against the people,' or 'The Levels of Steam,' or 'Survival'...hard to say. 'Antisocial Darwinism' comes to mind, but I'll stop now, not sure this is helping...

Write the book under any working title you care to think of.. the actual title should present itself once you're in the final stages of editing.  There's no need to over-think the title at the start, otherwise you risk being driven by your title rather than letting the narrative unfold.

Write the book, then think of a title, it will be a lot easier then.

There are very few books which would be any the worse for a completely different title.

What you have at the moment is more of a concept than a plot as such, it's very early days yet to be worrying about the title.

Only one real question, the mutant slaying viggie', is he or is he not a mutant ?  less obvious mutation perhaps, but still a mutant....

Then name the story after the mutation ! "Bad Blood"  or "Bad Brains"  or what ever....

Eh, I dunno. I agree with whoever said to name the book after the name of the city.

Speaking as a writer myself, I agree with others who have said just pick a working title (and write the damn thing (no offense)). It will be a lot easier to think of a title once you've got it written and are relatively happy with it, otherwise there's a danger of basing the title on what YOU see as a key/central theme/plot point/event which is missed by the readers because you've spent so little time on it in the actual text/not mentioned.

"Jeffrey Postlethwaite and the Mutants of Doom"

Surely that's a more a name for a band than a book! Grin

When reading your summary, the word "Gauntlet" stood out to me.
It describes your character and also a piece of armour. When the hero starts fighting the Mutants, he becomes the metaphorical gauntlet of the city.
Also, "running the gauntlet" was a form of military punishment and "throwing down the gauntlet" means issuing a challenge. I assume your hero will at some point challenge the unequal society and will get into trouble for that?

There was a sci-fi book written in the 70s-80s much like this; mile-high skyscrapers. I think it was called The World Inside, or something to that effect. Nice to see an SP twist to it.

"The Mutants of Fire Sky", "Freak Rage", "The Doom Merchants", "Blood Fall", "Creature War", "Mutant City", "Halls of Doomscape", "Future Scream", "Cry Mutant", "The Dragon People", "Flesh Crawl", "The Altered Man", "Change to Horror", "Mutropolis", "Mutant Nation",

In many ways, the list is endless. It just a question of imgaination.

I would go with "The Monster of Harcourt" or whatever city name you decide on.  I know such a title is a bit unoriginal, but it works.
