Without being able to adapt Datamancer's excellent technique, the only other idea I can conjure is to employ a flexible skin of sorts stretched over the entire keyboard and then inked for position and location of symbols (A'la AoD Necrinomicon perhaps).

Now that's an interesting concept. You might look at the flexible keyboards for that, since they are very thin, and the keys don't stick up much.
