I made a lamp out of bits I had laying about and fitted a U.V. bulb with the intention of using the finished product as a stage light...
During the test the bulb melted the perspex "window" (I thought it was glass Doh!)...
It did look really good until then...

I'm having a hard time understanding this picture...is it before or after the melting took place?  I see what might be melting on or over the light bulb...I'm thinking that melted glass-like stuff could look cool in its own right, though.

It's after the event...
I opened it up and it took a big lump out of the expensive U.V. bulb..
The perspex is not good in the middle section...
So I'm going to cut out the melted bit, replace it with a piece of perforated copper and put a neon flicker bulb in it...

I say keep going for it because it'll look damn cool!

If God thought The Doors were better than Cream, Jim Morrison would be able to defend his band today. Either this disproves God, or proves Clapton is the real god.

It is a lovely item no matter the functionality.  I especially like the filigree in the corners.

It looks great.

Unfortunately, those incandescent bulb type UV lights aren't really. They try to be by blocking all but the highest frequencies from escaping. But, since incandescent bulbs don't produce much in that wavelength, it really just sort of glows purple, while turning the captured light into heat.

They don't look as steamy, but you can get compact fluorescent UV bulbs. And those do not give off much heat at all, while giving off quite a bit of UV light.

Thanks for that info... I did see the fluorescent bulbs in Maplin... It's not the UV that's really important more the overall look... I have a Squirrel cage bulb I want to try in it but I have to put in an "appropriate" dimming device... It will look like an arc of brass studs with a handle to increase/decrease the power but will cunningly hide the fact that it's a dimmer switch under the box lid... or, maybe, a long throw fader... decisions, decisions....
