My experiments etching plates for my electric guitar project has led to a better understanding of the capabilities of the etching process. This weekend I made three USB drives using my new etching skills. Basically I built up a design on the brass cases using stickers, then etched and tinted the result before pulling the stickers off. The ends were coated black with a fat Sharpie to protect them from the etching solution.

Now if you meet someone you might like, you can say, "would you like to come up and see my etchings?"

Most Impressive Mr Rockwell!! Shocked

May I be so bold to ask what kind of stickers were used in your process, as I really want to have a go at etching brass and copper but every "resist" I use seems to fail dismally and I cant afford a laser printer.

I have used a car battery charger and salt water, which makes the piece bubble and etch, but always turns out rubbish.

The stickers I'm using are called Dazzles, in the UK you can also get Anitas. I'm using Etching Solution that sells at Radio Shack, and a brass darkener from a stained glass supplier. I leave the stickers and other masking covers on until I'm finished with the darkener, then take everything off and use a 2000 emery cloth and polish.

Will, another Great looking creation!  It's been bugging me...I seemed like I had seen a similar shape before.  It just dawned on me, back in the days when I use to <Choke, Choke, Cough Cough> Smoke Cigarettes, there was a company that made metal sleeves to put a cheep plastic BIC lighter in.  Made them look much more expensive.  You might consider building some.
I checked at www.lightercovers.com and they do not have anything to show up when I searched their site for steampunk.  Smiley

It would be easy to make those, but I just can't justify making smoking accessories

Well...that explains why that line never worked for me....  I thought the saying went " would you like to come up and see my itchings?"  Look of disgust every time...

either way nice etchings..

Something like this? I made this months ago and forgot all about it, just found it in the smokers cabinet! I didn't know anyone made them. You'll have to forgive the cog, I was at a loose end and got the urge to make something.
