Hello, newber here, have been lurking for a few days, and have had no trouble accessing everything, however, now that I'm a registered member, about a three quarters of the time, when I click on a thread I get the following message -
Database Error Please try again. If you come back to this error screen, report the error to an administrator.
Not being able to view most other threads, I don't know if this problem has been addressed elsewhere, apologies if so. Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong! Thank-you.

Hi, Sorry you've had this message, would you mind providing a few details? - What browser are you using - Is it happening on specific threads, if so could you provide a few links to example not working, and working threads? - Has anything else changed since you registered? Thanks, ~Longeye~

When trying to read the forum while not logged in I have no problems. However, when I log in, when trying to read posts just about anywhere all I get are Data Base Error messages. Is this a problem with me?

It's not just you, Proteus is already aware of it as I've been having problems for a few days now.

Are these problems account-or user specific? I'm online quite a bit and I haven't had such problems at all..

Neither, they seem to be database specific. We're looking into it

Looks like MySQL was having trouble allocating RAM; we have plenty, but it wasn't using it. I'm working on it but it's the sort of thing where I make a change and it takes quite a while to know if it worked. Thanks for patience.

Hi: I can't get back into my post nor can I get into other posts or anywhere on the site without getting an error message. I've been trying to find a way to email the administrator, but I get another error message. I've registered as per the instructions, but I have no idea what's going on . Can anyone help? MCHolly

Could you perhaps tell us what the error message is?

Will be it fixed one day ? I still can't see topics when logged on. I can reply only by view sb. profile, then see all his posts, then write a reply. It's not very comfortable :p

I have been seeing this occasionally. Earlier today (around 4:45 pm Eastern Daylight) I tried to view Metaphysical and got a white (non-CSS) page that said "SMF could not connect to the database. This may be because the server is busy...," and earlier this week I saw a BG-styled page that said "A database error has occurred. If you see this message again, please contact an administrator."
In both cases, a moment's wait cleared the problem, but I hear that some newcomers are seeing these errors more often than not.

As uncomfortable as you are, imagine my discomfort at knowing a service that I'm providing is broken. I really am working on it; things are improving, but the long gap between making changes and knowing if they work (because this is an intermittent and hard-to-replicate issue) means it may be a bit before the changes are noticable to the users.
As a bit of background, this all stems from a security patch to MySQL that wiped out our tuned config file. The last round of tuning didn't make it into the backups for some reason, so I'm trying to reconstruct what I did from an older backup -- from a time when BG was far less busy. On top of that, the Intrusion Prevention System in use by our hosting company caused issues with the Blog's caching function, which means the busy blog is now also taxing the database.
The hardware is capable of handling it, but the database server is having trouble accessing all the hardware's resources when the server is at it's busiest.

Thanks for the update, proteus. I know what a godawful pain performance tuning can be — especially when the sweet spot is a moving target! Would it help for (some of) us to PM you details of specific occurrences (eg. date, time, etc.) or would it be more helpful for us to sod off and let you work in peace?

Not anymore -- I've enabled some detailed logging to give me that info. But thanks for the offer!
For what it's worth, the fastest way to get my attention when there are problems is to email proteus at brassgoggles.co.uk, or use @brasstech on Twitter. I check those resources more than the forum itself -- and since they're independent of the site, they'll keep working when the site has trouble.

Don't know if it's even worth mentioning but yesterday I was getting strange script referring tp the 'Bad Behaviour' thingamajig and several of my posts and the replies to them have dropped off the edge of the world. Seems o.k. today but several conversations were lost. Ironically, they were mainly in the 'More things that made you happy today' thread.

Heh, no worries.... I only noticed because I'd been doing java (which sounds somehow euphemistic...) for 3 hours prior.... which now I say it out loud isn't a good thing...... ~Longeye~
