So, as I was trying to navigate the forum the other day on my iPod it hit me: why is there no app or mobile version of this forum?

If anyone is interested in helping (I have a job and college classes so I cannot do it all myself) build either an app or mobile version of this forum, I would be pleased in assisting in the development.

Whilst I could lend a hand with an Android version, there are a few problems though, it and would be complicated. It has been suggested that an app for BG be made, but the short end of it is that it's far too complicated and cost-incurring for what it would actually provide Sad

What would be really useful would be for your laptop/desktop, tablet, iPod, smartphone and whatever-else-can-be-used-as-a-computer-of-sorts to all have the same operating system!  But no, that's too simple!

A bit like numbers, really.  You have your National Insurance number, passport number, drivers licence number, telephone number(s), all those websites that insist on a 'user ID' that is a random combination.... as Bill Bryson once pointed out, why can't you have a personal number that does everything?

Persons intending to travel by open carriage should select a seat with their backs to the engine, by which means they will avoid the ashes emitted therefrom, that in travelling generally, but particularly through the tunnels, prove a great annoyance; the carriage farthest from the engine will in consequence be found the most desirable.

It might be simpler to give the extant site a set of styles for mobile, which would then run in whichever mobile browser one was using. I don't know what's under the hood here at present, so can't comment on the scope of the work involved, but CSS and a style sheet switching script are typically much less hassle than supporting iOS and various implementations of Android. I'm the UI/graphics side of an app development team, and I'm just glad I don't have to handle the coding side.
BoingBoing appears to have done something along these lines, and it seems to have worked out rather well for them.

We're using "SMF 1.1.15", details at the bottom of the page. A little work will show you everything it's capable of, and if anyone can bring a workable solution to the board it will be given a lot of attention. I can't guarantee anything will be implemented, that's Proteus job, but if it's doable it's possible! Smiley
