I won this little beauty on eBay this morning. The auction's description was sort of vague on it's origins- "Exquisitely vintage carved image of God or Goddess. Not sure what kind of bone this statue is carved from, most probably ox bone. Beautiful extreme detail on all sides. Unsure of country of origin but appears to be possibly Southest Asian country, possibly India or Burma (Myanmar)." By any chance, is there someone here who knows the mythologies of the region well enough to give me a hint as to what I just bought?

it looks like the Hindu god Ganesh to me.
He has an elephant head, wears a crown, has 4 arms and sits on a lotus flower. What you have there is narrower than any representation I've seen before and clearly very stylised but all those elements appear to be there.
Im gonna go out on a limb and say its Indonesian. The headdress certainly looks SE Asian Hindu anyway.

I'm going to go with Ganesh as well. Can't say where abouts the sculpture originated but it has some amazing detail given it's size. What you have there is narrower than any representation I've seen before But not unheard of... No disrespect intended to any Hindus reading this but I can't see Ganesh without hearing Apu Nahasapeemapetilon saying "Please do not offer my God a peanut"

Thanks everyone for narrowing that down. Here I was hoping it was from some weird Polynesian cult. Ganesh crossed my mind, but I wasn't sure. I've never seen one that skinny or carved from bone before. Now that I have a name, the search gets easier; it seems to be a small homemade version of this gold statue from Bali- It'll make a good addition to my little collection of oddities. Definitely a nice accidental find. I looked at the rest of the sellers inventory hoping he had more like it, but it was all high end bicycle parts; makes me wonder if there's a story behind the statue.

There's a phone app called Google Goggles (I know, right!) and it may well help here. You can take a photo of an item/land amrk, and it will Google it for you using the image!

Thanks but I don't own a smart phone. I did try Google's image search, but all it gave me was a link back to the auction I won.

I think it would look nicer if the orangy varnish was removed. Hopefully it will come out whiter, whatever it is made from.

Just don't put that thing under your wife's pillow before she goes to sleep. It may be an 'artifact'.

Not a problem there, as I'm not married. My ex-wife on the other hand...

Name that Blasphemous Idol? I bet that you know where this is going ... "This is my Idol ... I shall display him and pet him and feed him carrots. And I shall name him George." sorry 'bout that ... it had to be said

I love living in a time when a package can be shipped from Hawaii and turn up on my doorstep in Michigan three days later. Ganesh in his new home, looking a bit uncertain about his new roommate. (right click-> "view image" for full size)

Thanks. I found it on eBay UK about a year ago; it's the one Nemesis Now put out a couple of years back, but never got around to releasing in the US. There was a great deal of sighing and eye-rolling from my friends when I bought that.

Thanks, but it's just a bookshelf. The altar is by the window; that's where I keep the weird stuff.

Very Nice - I like the mirror too. I always wanted giant lego bricks , chess pieces and a mushroom ( caterpillar welcome of course ) myself. 4 o4
