Hello all, I am currently planning a tea party, and am looking for thrifty ideas for fun activities.  My first thoughts include some Victorian parlor games, some ghost stories,  and learning how to read tea leaves. Any other ideas? My plan is to have it by candlelight this fall when it gets dark earlier. I am looking at a few kinds of sandwiches, some yummy baked goods, And fresh fruit,  And a variety of teas so that we can try new things. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you for your time!

You should definitely play charades.

Also you should have people singing or reciting poetry of the period. That would have been absolutely routine at a victorian tea party.

Other threads here discuss steampunk songs and adaptations of familiar songs to have a more steampunk feel.

Pin the cog on the ... somthing?  or pin the goggles on the airship pilot.

Have 3 jars full of bits of paper.  In jar 1 each paper describes an item of clothing (e.g. a bright red military jacket with gold braid and a large purple stain and in jar 2 each has an accessory or weapon (a black silk fan feathers) or a sword cane with a ruby in the handle), jar 3 has a means of transport (steam powered jet pack)  each person/team must draw one paper from each jar (or 2 and really make them work) then create and present a persona and backstory to account for the items.

Edited to add jar 4 Secrets, anything that the casual observer would not see: Perhaps  wearing a red corset with black lace (difficult to explain if the item of clothing is a priest's robe) or a hidden pocket containing the blue prints to Buckingham Palace or carrying a torn piece of paper with the cryptic message "the time is not yet come for us to..."

Or ! You could do as we used to do at parties. Get drunk and sing all kinds of bawdy songs. Not something I recommend any more . It was fun at the time though.

Uncle Arthur, there will be a few underage persons at the party, and I actually do not drink, but I'm sure some of them would like to sing the songs still  Smiley

Hez, those are wonderful ideas! I actually may make my husband use the jar one for the writing group we have at our bookstore the next time they are out of ideas!

Thank you both very much!

How about making your own goodie bags? It's not quite Victorian, but it's fun.
Simply get a selection of papers (you can also use pages from old books) and nice little nick-knacks to decorate, things like doilies, cut outs from magazines, tags, ribbons, and decorative hole punches. Follow these instructions to fold:
http://hellosandwich.blogspot.co.uk/2011/12/paper-gift-bag-tutorial.html

Have a bowl of sweets, mini treats, fruit, whatever you like in the middle of the table and people can fill their bags up. It's a nice little thing to take away.

Hope this helps!

Dancing? Though that requires a largish space. Later on you could start a venetian style masquerade. Though that might be ruined by the fact you know what everyone's wearing.

Tea duelling and charades seems wonderful.

Just remember to pack a deck of cards!

I would love to host a masquerade here, but I don't think too many people in my town would come to one. That will have to be my next endeavor, perhaps!

why not duel with rubber band guns or the like?

also, if you will be outside, a game of mumbleypeg perhaps? not formal really, nor really ladylike.... but unorthodox and antiquated to be sure, which is often our collective style.

Rubber band guns would certainly offer a legitimate reason to wear goggles!

Also,  I'm not sure anyone has goggles, nor how many are interested in steampunk as opposed to the tea aspect.
