Captain Nemo could be/sometimes is interpreted as being something of a pirate. In 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea he is portrayed as having an axe to grind against an un-named colonial power (later revealed as Britain), and he has few qualms about ramming ships with intent to sink them (and, having done so, usually does precious little to save their crews- Aronnax and his companions are only saved from the sea, after Nemo has rammed the USS Abraham Lincoln, because they are able to tell the same story of how they got there, and their peaceful intentions, in several languages).
Given that context, you could make a case for having an SP pirate costume/persona- it would just, I feel, have to owe more to 19th Century naval uniform and tradition (though obviously with some form of flair and decorum definitely not in the Rule Book!).

I think this was the question though wasn't it? Pirates can dress like anything, as illustrated by this movie amongst others. This does contain some upsetting scenes by the way. But it is based on a Jules Verne novel and is one take on C19th pirates.
But if you turned up somewhere dressed like the pirates in that film, folks wouldn't necessarily realise that's what you were going for, because there are very fixed (and often inaccurate) preconceptions of what pirates wore. I mean in all honesty I don't think Abney Park exactly dress like classic pirates either. We just know that's what they are trying to present because ...well because they tell us it is.  So I presumed the question was more could what is now considered classic pirate wear be Steampunk? |

Alright Now I have some decisions to make and I want some help please. I know for sure I'm doing the drop-front pants, that go up mid calf. Now on the Jacket I have to choose either a frock coat, a Tail coat, or the very piraty jack sparrow coat. I was thinking of doing all victorian style clothes like the pants vest and shirt but the jacket in the pirate style. I couldn't make these decisions on my own since you've all been so helpful so far.  I'm currently choosing from the simplicity and burda patterns both are on simplicity.com, if ya want to take a look sorry for no direct links. |

This coat looks potentially a bit special. It looks almost Regency and the kind of design Impero leather have been known to take inspiration from. And obviously this is your classic Justaucorps. I was looking to put a Pirate costume together myself quite recently (before life and finances went crash). For a coat I settled on this type of thing. It is one of the later styles, I've certainly seen those lapel type facings on C19th military style jackets. Still they are all suitably piratey, just bear in mind the coats without collars or lapels are an earlier design.

If you had, you would know that not only is pirate clothing "steampunkish" but is what we wear while fighting the evil empire. I by direct attack and Captain Shakespeare by supplying lightning to the rebellion! Believe me, Captain Shakespeare has quite a wardrobe to select from!  |

Well nice to hear from an airship pirate I was wondering if you had any suggestions on what to make my wardrobe of haha i just keep getting even more lost from seeing so many great ideas lol I just have no direction as of now haha |

Much like the military, I have three out fits. I have the plain and simple that I wear while working in the ships shop. A plain white shirt with simple common britches, and a simple red rag to keep dust out of me hair. I then go to the puffy armed shirts, me tricorn hat boots and more suitable pants with matching over coat, when we are attacking the ships of the evil empire for plunder. Then there is the top hat and tails for very fancy to do's. Watch my friend Captain Shakespere and you will see his outfits change too. No, I do not have the hidden wardrobe he does, nor do I want it. You should see that 3 outfits will work for almost all events. |
