I'm considering trying to grow bamboo in a pot (probably a rather large pot after a while). I was hoping to be able to get some of the "clumping" rather than the "running" variety; the "running" sort being the stuff that runs amok and takes over the entire neighborhood in short order, and makes your neighbors want to kill you (no joke, a neighbor has done this very thing, and he's not terribly popular just now...).
Supposedly, the "clumping" variety is not as aggressive (knock on wood, or perhaps bamboo, in this case).
Can anyone tell me how find some of the clumping variety, and how to start it/care for it/possibly harvest stalks, when they get to a certain size?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice that you can give.

And then when you've grown enough bamboo I'm guessing you'll make something cool like this bamboo armor...........

Cool armour! I'd suggest finding a fairly local garden centre and having a look at their stock. You'll soon be able to spot any that aren't thriving in your local climate. Then have a look at what's coming up in the pot - the stuff we had was clearly clumping even within its post.

We have several specialist bamboo vendors around here, and many of them ship. Check out http://bamboosourcery.com/ for an example, and see what they might recommend.

There was a craze for black bamboo in the UK a few years ago so we bought a load the year after when garden centres were selling them off cheap. Alternating with a golden bamboo (both of which are clumping rather than triffidesque) has made a very attractive hedge. The only problem is that instead of growing outwards, they have grown upwards - 15 feet and more.

Thanks a million ror all your replies, folks!.
Actually I was planning to do a cart to haul my instruments (banjo(s) mandolin, flutes, didjeridoo, etc) around on, and maybe also a flute or two, or perhaps a didj, or both.
The armor does look intriguing , however... Hmmm...

It had to be done, yes, but for subjecting us to possibly the worst mockney accent in living memory you now have to go and clean the internet. With your toothbrush. In 25 minutes or less.

In terms of care of bamboo, there seems to be one basic rule to get it to grow fast and tall - keep it wet, very wet. Despite multiple attempts I never managed to overwater our bamboo, and the more I watered, the faster/taller it grew.
And for cutting, just saw the canes off as close to the base as possible (you can use secateurs, but it usually splits them) and if you do it in the Spring it encourages further growth.
If you don't grow them in a pot, you can do what I did - dig a trench 4 foot deep all around the bamboo plot, put in a continuous line of corrugated plastic sheets (overlapping the edges) and then refill the trench. Five years on and nothing has escaped so far.

Many years ago I had a large supply of bamboo and made several bongs smoking pieces of furniture. Be sure to seal the pieces lest they dry out and start splitting.

I tried growing bamboo once, but the entire crop was wiped out by a wandering panda. Still haven't figured out how it got there.

As long as we don't start pandaring to their needs, we should be alright in the long run.
