Coming from Disney. Apparently its a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. Seems a tad similar to Burton's Alice in Wonderland, but might still be worth a look.

from what i can see in the trailer it looks like they're trying to make it more action based, i'll reserve judgement until i can see more of it though

That seems more in line with the original stories. It was Hollywood who brought in the songs and dance numbers.

Huh. As someone who absolutely loves the original books (my dad has the entire collection, or at least the ones by Frank L. Baum) I have no idea what to make of this. I always have problems with books to movies. Count of Monte Cristo was a disaster, but Lord of the Rings was quite good. From the trailer I am a bit...confused as to who is who (aside from the flying monkey bit) and are we sure about James Franco as the Wizard?

Well, for what its worth, the Wikipedia entry has a good bit of info. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oz:_The_Great_and_Powerful"When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz), and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well."
So lets see, Theodora - The Wicked Witch of the West, Evandora - The Wicked Witch of the East , Glinda - The Good Witch of the South I guess the North had more important things to worry about.

Unless you go by the books and then it's Wicked Witch of the East - Nessarose, Wicked Witch of the West - Elphaba, and The Good Witch of the North - Glinda who also appears to be the Southern Witch sometimes but when she is the southern witch the Nothern one is called Locasta.... *sigh* waaaaay too confusing.

I think this looks pretty interesting. If course I probably won't ever see it, because that's what always happens with movies. But, I'm looking forward to seeing some reviews of it on our fine forum.

Yes, that certainly resembles Disney's recent Alice in Wonderland film...which I generally liked, except for Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter, so I'll give this a look. The shot of the teapot city also resembles the one in the recent Alice: Madness Returns game...I'm sensing a pattern! The books & original movie did such a good job with worldbuilding, I hope they manage to incorporate some of that in here, & not just string a series of action setpieces together I actually really liked the "real world" segments in Alice in Wonderland. -R

*head tilt* I always wondered what was so pressing that she could leave a little farm girl to wander around Oz alone, because no other adult in Oz seemed to think that was okay. Should be fun, hope they don't mess it up.

I've always wanted to see the soldiers in an action, instead of just marching around and chanting, "Oh-Wee-Oh, OOOOH, oh..."

I always thought the Winkie guards were singing "Oh Wee-Oh, OOOH, oh...". However after watching the film with captions I found out they were singing "Oh We Love the Old One". Some believe they were singing "All we own, we owe her" or "Oh we loathe the old one". I guess it is a Rorschach test afterall. Anyway I am really hoping that this new film is as Great and Powerful as the Man himself. Doh! just beat me to it! Rick Polito of the Marin Independent Journal printed in Northern California is locally famous for his droll, single-sentence summations of television programs and movies which the newspaper reports will be broadcast. For the Wizard of Oz, he wrote, "Transported to a surreal landscape, a young girl kills the first person she meets and then teams up with three strangers to kill again." Like Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz has dark undertones and I hope they get properly explored.
