Ok I posted this on The BrassGoggles Crew on etsy and Thought I would share it here so everyone can have fun and play with it.

OK we have all seen it done BADLY!!!! You know what I mean. Take some common object and glue some gears on it maybe add a little paint and WOW its steam punk.....NOT!!! LOL The question and the Challenge is can this be done well to make a visually interesting piece of art. So here are the guide lines (note I did not say rules). 1) The object should be something easily found by most people. 2) using mostly gears (or gear shapes) decorate it, so it is cool and interesting. 3) have fun. Lets show people just what can be done by adding gears to something hehe.
Yes I will be listing something on my etsy page in the next couple days that is decorated with Gears but still came out very cool.

JJ

P.S. As an added bonus  There is no real metal gears used in the piece I am listing just resin ones I cast myself.

I would rather have something that actually works or preforms some task that has it's gears exposed.  My favorite is the skeleton clock.  I would rather see a toaster, that when the toast comes up, a couple for fake gears actually turn than a toaster that has gears simply glued to it.  Perhaps the brass mechanism from a clock driving a toy car.   Maybe an electrical motor wired in parallel to your microwave transformer, so that the motor drives a set of gears on the front of the microwave until it cuts off.  Thus giving the appearance that somehow the gears power the microwave.  (Well, maybe a microwave might be dangerous, but the same idea would apply to other devices.
Just my 2 cents....

Thank the Cogs! They must be useful for something, 'cause they don't bloody keep time…

I have been taking working clockworks and making them into moving sculptures. Does this count?

In flicker, right click on image,
select properties,
copy the image name (besure to get the whole name all the way to the JPG ending
In BG, click on the image icon
Right click in the middle of the image tags and Paste the name you just copied
Check preview and there you have it.

This is one of the most blatant examples of my work where an object was allegedly converted to Steampunk simply by sticking gears on it. This was an early work, but I stand by it and still consider it an improvement and worthy of SP designation

Mr. Rockwell, have I commented recently on your bizarre ability to stick gears to something and make it look good?

Thank you, I take plenty of flak for using gears, just for the principal of it. My "philosophy" is this - brass gears are some of the most beautiful and symmetrical designs of the 19th century, but every single one of them was hidden inside a box or watch case, and only a clockmaker ever saw them. I advocate removing brass gears from broken clocks and putting them on display, using their hidden beauty as examples of the harmony of Victorian design. As such I feel free to cut them up, curve them, and affix them regardless of their purpose of rotating. Bringing gears into the open is a logical extension of Victorian aesthetic and hence, legitimate Steampunk design.

Mr Rockwell, your pieces are simply lovely..I also see the aesthetic appeal of gears, I use them in my fused glass pieces. My favorite is just an amazing looking clock gear with a smaller gear inside it. If I had a picture I would post it..

Mr. Rockwell Those are amazing and wonderful.   I completely agree with you about gears.  A part of me has been saddened in the past  that the gear has come to be the "face" symbol of the steampunk movement.  Not because I do not like gears, No because I love them, and it has saddened me to see them used so badly.     Your work raises the lovely gear to new heights.   Thank you.

... I would rather see a toaster, that when the toast comes up, a couple for fake gears actually turn than a toaster that has gears simply glued to it.

Hmm- by carefully affixing large flat gears inside the toaster, between the bread and the rack, Well Away from the Element, you could have toast with gears toasted (or rather untoasted) into the bread... A little OT from the subject of the thread, but not the spirit!  Grin
