BBC AMERICA

New York City Police, circa 1864

The 10-episode, hour-long show, shot in Toronto, launches Aug. 19, the latest artful effort on TV to re-create and animate the past.

I saw this trailer just yesterday and thought, hey, I should watch that. Though I admit myself confused, I was under the impression that BBC America was where BBC shows were aired State side, consequently, bewildered as I am, why do I get the impression that we want it to go the other way?

Well, usually it is the case that BBC America airs repeats of British shows that have made it big in the states on other networks (the big ones being Torchwood and the revamped Doctor Who) and exists primarily to export them, but I do believe that there has been some traffic in the other direction, particularly the rather lackluster cooperations between the BBC and American networks e.g. The Tudors and Rome.

I watch a great many shows on BBCA and they are always repackaged BBC series (which is fine w/me btw).  This one is different however, as it is being advertised as BBCA's 'first original scripted drama'. markf

Well now, I may have to find someone who gets BBC America, as I do not have cable. Or a TV (I usually rely on the aetherwebs for watching shows).

This seems as if it'll be worth the watch.  Mayhaps it'll run past the few planned episodes if it garners enough support.

Well, who watched the season premiere? I have to say, there may have been to much hype, because I thought it was kinda "meh." Also, the fact that it didn't seem to be made for having commercials made the awkwardly placed commercial breaks very, very annoying (but that's not the show's fault, that would be the network). I wont say anything else though, as I do not wish spoilers upon anyone, even my worst enemies.

Forgive me if this shouldn't go here, but it's possible that it might show up:  http://www.fastpasstv.ms/tv/  I watch many british shows there, like Graham Norton for one.  There are some ads here and there, but they're not horrible like some places.

Is that one of those sites where you have to download their torrent host thingy just to watch stuff? I'm a tad mistrustful of those since my last computer was so badly buggered by one it can't even boot up anymore.

No, nothing to do with torrents.  They have movies and tv.  Look down the list and pick a show, then on the next tab (I use Firefox) pick a site to watch it on (new tab will open).  Since I have adblock, I never see ads.  Nothing downloads, although I have Ant vid downloader (firefox addon), so I can download the show and watch it whenever.  It's easier since I have so many addons, sometimes videos don't want to play smoothly.  Sometimes there might be a captcha thing to type in, but that's only shown up on a few of the links, and just recently.

BBCA listed some review highlights (clearly the good reviews), I thought it was just ok, certainly not great or even very good. Once the stories get rolling we'll see if it gets better.  markf

I thought it was alright as far as season premiers go. It seemed to me that the 1st opening episode was more to set up the coming plot lines than anything else. I am not to sure of this next point as a history major but I have a feeling that the series relies heavily on the viewers existing knowledge of history. I take this stance because my wife was completely lost since she cares and knows little about history. Shouldn't be a problem for anyone on this board though.  Smiley

My overall impression is that at the moment they are banking on the perception of the viewers romantic infatuation of the violence inherent with the settings location and time period to carry the show until the plot picks up.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, I originally looked at it thinking maybe I could come away with some good costuming ideas, but wound up enjoying the plot line. I found it very interesting to compare modern day police operations with the way which they were portrayed in the show and sadly enough I thought that was probably one of the most accurate parts of the show, many complain about the force police today use, or how the authority they have may be abused, however way back then corruption, graft and heavy handedness was very rampant and accepted as the way things just were. Those who could afford justice were the ones who decided what justice meant and most police departments at the time were less organized than they are today....

So far I'm enjoying it. I've heard it described as a CSI:New York, 1860's style, and I like how the doctor is a bit of a forensics expert. They haven't brought any of the notorious Five Points gangs into it yet; that would also spice things up a bit.

Husband and I have been watching this series - needless to say, we both really enjoy it. I like how gritty it is, and how it is based in a less-than-glamorous setting than what is typically thought of for that period of time (I mean honestly, the first association most people have with the era is Victorian London, lovely ladies and gents of good social standing, etc.)

I've been following the show's blog, and I like how they actually provide some historical background for each episode. I like how many layers of stories there are.

It's definitely not for everyone, that's for sure, but we enjoy it.

I can see my DVD list growing ever more expensive. Only having basic freeview I miss out on a lot of series, but I want to make sure this runs before getting into it. I'm just about to buy the whole Deadwood series which I've yet to see. Same story for Boadwalk Empire and I've only recently heard about this as well which is apparently now in season 2.
