Wow that was really cool. I liked how the mechanics of it were on display and not hidden away, as well. (I had to watch it with the mute on though. I can't stand that song!).

My second Automata was pre 1800's...EVE "waiting for Adam"

A few from the "Far East" showcased on an Italian program.  Hope I added these links correctly-

Hobby Link Japan used to sell kits of the archer and the teacup carrying automaton.  They were said to be based on the designs of originals dating from the 1600s.  I don't think they list them anymore though.

I was watching another video on Shobei Tamaya IX (the man in the video) and he said that his family has been making dolls and automatons like this for generations and that he hand carves the dolls, including the faces which can take over a year even before he begins adding the mechanical parts!
