Captain Nemo rescues a nearly drowned Chapaev (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasily_Chapayev)

Prishvin teaches Allan Quartermain the high art of hunting. With a mallet (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikhail_Prishvin)

I'm overwhelmed by the complexities of these renderings! (I see the humor, of course, but the intricacy of the images is is phenomenal! Imagine the dedication it takes to be so faithful to the rendering as to be able to make the entire sky of tiny swirls, and then to accommodate the clouds, for example).

Actually, they are woodcuts or linocuts, so someone carved out all the tiny lines and curls, which makes it a little more difficult than using a pen.

Dr. Pavlov presents to his colleagues a new breed of dog commissioned by Prof. Stapleton

Can you guess all the doctors?

Pavlov and Jekyll-Hyde, right.

Second from the left. In white clothes with an owl on his shoulder, this is a Soviet literary / folklore character. I don't think you know him.

But the other two should know. These are classically famous doctors.

The guy with the owl on his shoulder is Doctor Aybolit?
And if you are talking fictional characters and vivisection, then one of the other two is probably Doctor Moreau?

My brain now hurts...

Yes. "But how did you guess Holmes?"

yes. Dr. Moreau. I recognized him by his hat. The mushroom hat and the bleached face from some film adaptation, at one time, made an unforgettable impression on me.

There was one left. Far right. Who else made creatures out of pieces using scientific methods. Really the number 1 star.

No. This is Dr. Aibolit (a name that speaks, approximately like - oh! It hurts).

A character in the works of the Soviet children's writer Korney Chukovsky.

First there was a translation-retelling of the story by Hugh Lofting. And then there are unique poetic works with this character.

And then movies and cartoons.

His name became a household name. And a lot has entered folklore.

Now these are probably canonical images.

This is an image from the 1984 animated series.

And this is from the movie '66.

Well, what do you know? I learned something this afternoon! Thanks!

I hope I wasn't being offensive with the reference to Lem (his works are somewhat notorious, I hear  ;)).

I looked up Korney Chukovsky then did an image search and saw pictures from his books of a man holding a rabbit with a cross on his hat and found his name "Aybolit". Then I looked up Doctor Aybolit and guessed it was him.  ;D

notorious? Why?

He's a great writer. And he really is a Soviet writer. If he was still a Russian writer, I would be proud.

It's getting more mysterious.

Why did you watch Korney Chukovsky?

It seems that I called this name after you guessed the character. Or have I let it slip somewhere before?

(First - I am having a few rounds of immunotherapy for cancer, (prevention) which leaves me a bit unwell but well enough to sit in front of a computer for a few hours and keep looking for things until I find them.  I like solving puzzles, and I had to solve one where you told me I wouldn't know who the character was... That meant I HAD to find who it was. )

I did a search in Google something like; 'russian literary character with hat animals doctor'. Eventually I found this; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Aybolit

The picture at the top looked a bit like the man in the drawing, but I still wasn't 100% positive, so I used the authors' name 'Korney Chukovsky books' to do an image search and found a picture of Doctor Aybolit with the little white hat with the cross on it, then did an image search of Doctor Aybolit.

The internet knows everything.
