Hello Steampunkers,

I have put this post up to let you know about a big Steampunk musical that is going on this year at the prestigious Minack Theatre in Cornwall. This is that amazing outdoor theatre that is built on the edge of a cliff near Lands End. The theatre company I belong to have been going there bi-annually since 1972 and it is always a fantastic experience putting a show on there. Back in 2008 we performed a complete live version of Jeff Wayne's musical version of The War of The Worlds which went down an absolute storm and won the Minack trophy for best production of the 2008 season. We were wondering how we could follow that success of 4 years ago and have come up with something that we think is unique - a Steampunk fantasy musical.

This is a totally original story written by my friend Steve Thompson (Dr Who, Sherlock) and Mark O'Sullivan with music and lyrics by myself. The show is called 'The Book of Mirrors' and is set in a steampunk city built on a frozen planet of ice. The playing dates are Mon 13th Aug - Fri 17th Aug 2012.

The appeal of doing a steampunk musical is the amazing visual aspects of the genre and our creative people have leapt at the chance to design costume, props and set for the show.

The show itself has been nearly two years in the making and everything is starting to come together now. We have created our own website with pics, links, blogs and more info on the show. If you would like to read and see more about this exciting project, then please visit our site: www.bookofmirrors.com If you would like to check out the Minack Theatre too, then their website address is: www.minack.com

I would also welcome any feedback, comments from anyone on this site as you have been steampunks longer than we have. Of course, it would also be brilliant if any of you would like to come and see the show - and, obviously, to come in costume ! Cornwall is a lovely part of the world and the Minack is a magical place to see any theatre. If anyone does, then please let me know as it would be great to meet up after the show.

Please feel free to reply to this post with any inquiries etc.

regards,

This looks intriguing, sadly I couldn't hear the music because half the site appears to be password protected.

Hello,

Thanks for taking a look. The music is still a work in progress which is why it is still under wraps. Now that we have gone public with the show, I will see if I can get this amended. In the meantime, the galleries are accesible where you can see rehearsal pics as the show progresses and set and costume designs. This should be of interest to steampunkers too.

Hello all,

Our show 'The Book of Mirrors' is now over but it is not the end of the project. We intend to put it on in other venues in the coming months so will keep you informed of details (or, if anyone has any ideas for it, please let me know). We did approach Asylum UK Steampunk convention organisers earlier this year with the idea of adding the show (or part of it) to their itinary but were too late to get it in for the 2012 convention. Maybe 2013?

In the meantime, if you would like to hear some of the music, there is a montage available on the 'Show' page of our website www.bookofmirrors.com. There are also some great pics of the set design from page to stage in the Gallery section. Now we have more time, we will be updating our website  shortly with new design pictures as well as studio portraits showing the costumes in more detail. As a taster, here are some pics from the show to give you an idea of how it all looked.

Would welcome any feedback.

regards,
Rivetman
