I am not quilting my padding. I have had a very good look at my GGFs cap & have come to the conclusion that the quilting was, in effect an attempt to stabilise the padding during a repair. i don't think that the cap or padding was necessarily quilted as an automatic process.
Therefore, I am going to attach the padding at strategic points, as in around the edges & hem.
Could the Memsahib cope with that?

I may try to do something for this. I made a smoking cap last year and it was disastrous. However, I still have hopes. Please post any pictures of headgear that you have. I need some inspiration.

If that's you, your smoking cap and the adorable kitty, I say you did quite nicely. I have seen FAR worse. With price tags attached as well!

No, I wish. That is just a web find. Mine looked like a very goofy French forage cap made of upholstery from an old chair.

So what is wrong with your cap? If you let us see it we can then say suitable things about it. I promise we will be nice.

How should I say this....it may end up being my submission if I can't finish my intended one in time. (moving has been causing a lot of issues) So if I can get the time, this is just a teaser, if I cannot get the time...then this is my contribution. 1861 Regulation (with variation) Confederate Kepi with McDowell-style brim (I used a flat brim instead of a crescent though...liked it better) It was made from an tattered US military blanket, some light blue felt and painted leather and board. Everything that was connected to something else was sewn, so leather/fabric to board....sewn. It was all done by hand and is even lined. (which I will post if I end up stuck with this as my entry)

Now that the ungodly heat has let up I am finally back on track myself. Been pecking away a bit at a time on the appliques while I finalize the embroidery design for the body of the cap.

One should NEVER try to iron a piece of fabric dry with the incinerate setting!

Being your very typical single guy many things serve several purposes . I had just repaired loose veneer on a wall cabinet with the iron and failed to think ahead enough to actually look at the setting. Oh well. I really didn't like how the first was coming along any way ( Yeah right).

Don't worry too much, we have all done something very similar. (But I do feel so sorry for you, all the same.)

On the up side. The veneer was properly re-secured by the use of the steam iron. Most Old veneers are held on with animal based glue. Heat and moisture reactivate the glue. I usually follow by clamping the veneer down and life is good again.

Well, I did it. Ignore the kepi...I completed what I want to be my official entry. I decided to make....*drum roll* A SHAKO!!! The cockade, the brim, the actual basic structure of the hat, even the metal piece is all sewn together. There were no other attaching methods except simply sticking the feathers in the metal piece. Edit: Okay, last night I was not 100% complete, but now I am: the liner. And it kept its shape despite my completion of the exterior prior to my work inside, there were a few close calls. And I found out that the chin strap easily spins round for use as more than just decoration.

Oh, very nice, Uncle Arthur!
I have not done the embroidery or lining on mine yet, but the basic cap is done.
Are you going to make another one??
Mr Oakes, again, very nice effort. I am beginning to feel very insecure!

I thank you sir! In fact I have started a four panel beanie type cap just because I saw so many while researching the pill box type.

Please post pictures. I am dealing with my arthritis while sewing mine so I know what she is up against. Sorry it took so long, but I have finally got around to taking some pictures of the Memsahib's smoking caps. Rather more than I had intended I'm afraid. This is the first one that she made; didn't really turn out as she had hoped. The velvet was a complete b*gger to work with and it ended up too small to fit me comfortably. Still, 'We learn by doing'. The second one was a great improvement on all fronts. Staying with a black base, but using a taffeta and stiffer lining this time. She also tried out a different embroidery technique. Sadly it was still a trifle too small for me, so the third cap came into being… Using some jolly nice textured material that we picked up for pennies at a car boot sale (I think it was intended for curtains). The colour suggested the embroidery motif. The grape clusters are actually tiny garnet beads. And this time there is a double-sided storage compartment in the crown—jolly handy for lucifers, lighter and very small tobacco pouch, but it sits rather high if I try to squeeze a pipe in there. Everything is hand-sewn apart from the quilting. The piping and tassle cord were hand-made using a lucet and the tassle itself was made from various pieces of thread. She is currently working on smoking caps numbers four and five, one of which has a somewhat 'steamy' embroidery motif. I'm immensely proud of my dear wife and I love my birthday present smoking cap!
