I don't think, I explained myself properly.  Sad

I was thinking of the solar power actually powering the engine. But on reading both of your replies, I have to agree it would be impractical. So I'll just leave the solar panels to power the air conditioning in the carriages

There are some fireless locos in Germany. Those are fed by steam from the factory where they live and can run on that for some time. Some are already equipped with solar panels to power lights etc.
