It looks to me like we've lost something approaching 12 hours of posts after the latest outage. Is that right? Are those posts irretrievably lost?

I thought it a bit odd that there were only two new posts since I was last on at 7.pm last night!

Afraid so; we had a pretty severe failure, and had to restore from backup. We lost everything between the last backup and the point of failure (about 15 hours).

Fortunately, our backup system worked very well, so the loss was kept to a minimum. We don't currently have (and probably can't afford) a high-availability or high-reliability system, so this sort of thing was bound to happen eventually.

The good news is my confidence has been dramatically increased that we'll not lose more than a day's worth of data in a catastrophic event (short of the whole data center falling into the earth, which scenario has not been tested).

Ouch! Sounds like a pretty nasty server crash.

Thanks for getting us back up and running so quickly.

Errr… the data centre is nowhere near the San Andreas fault, is it?

Nope, middle of the country. We mostly have tornadoes (which the DC has weathered successfully) and the Yellowstone Supervolcano to worry about. Smiley
