Is "At the Earths Core"(1976) with Doug McClure very good? Is this "mole machine" the one displayed at Disney Japan? Did Disney produce this movie,or did they have a different movie with a "mole machine"?

As regards 'is this film any good'?..I guess that's a matter of opinion and depends on your age I suppose. I'm not aware that Disney had anything to do with this. This was a British production made by Amicus Films. It's SFX are ropey at best. Like most of the Troy Doug McLure films of this type (Warlords of Atlantis, Land That Time Forgot and it's sequel People That Time Forgot) it had a relatively small budget and the 'monsters' were usually a couple of guys in a big dinosaur costume or really naff looking puppets (see below in spoiler) For that reason I'm assuming the 'mole machine' you refer to that's at Disney Japan is from some other subterranean adventure? Here's the poster for AtEC..which shows the Mole machine quite clearly..is it the same one you refer to as being at Disney Japan? I had a bit of a scout about on the Web and found this 'blueprint' type drawing of a very steamy looking burrowing machine that is something to do with a 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' attraction at Disney Japan Although according to Wikipedia and the IMDb..Disney have never actually made a version of JTtCoTE...

Personally I love it, but as Capt D said, I'm of an age to have a fondness for this kind of cheese and I actually saw it at the cinema on release. It's really of a typical Doug McLure standard, Cushing bumbles his way through effortlessly, the effects are poor but fun and it definitely has at least a couple of things going for it.

Caroline Munro is good in every film. And on stage - ask Jack Union...
Those films are a bit variable - this one doesn't quite manage it, but Warlords of Atlantis has some great sequences, even if they are never followed through (usually because of the low budget) and The land that Time forgot is a great little film.
OK - they aren't modern CGI block-busters. But then they didn't have CGI or blockbuster budgets.
To be honest I haven't recently seen a modern film that made me feel as good as any of these.
You pay your money and take your choice I suppose.

I once read an article (in a printed form, not the web!) that said that this film was very much a third Amicus Doctor Who movie, Cushing as the Doctor, McClure as the Ian/Tom Campbell character, Monroe as the female companion, same producers/writers, etc...

I remember watching this movie on TV when I was a kid. Loved every minute of it. Sadly, the weekend "Creature Features" and "Sci-Fi Matinees" have gone the way of the (puppet) dinosaurs, and the world is a poorer place for it.

I think I will like it. Not quite Ajor (Dana Gillespie) from "The People that Time Forgot", but then maybe I should watch to make sure!!

Well, I've got a friend who use to be the Executive Vice President of Production at Disney so I think I'll drop him a line and suggest Disney make a Steampunk movie that would use such a "Mole Machine".

I believe that the Mole Machine in Disney Japan is part of an attraction that expands on the Jules Verne universe created by 20000 Leagues Under the Sea, called Mysterious Island. This contains a ride called Journey to the Centre of the Earth. As for the Movie, at the earths core, it contains what is possibly one of the all time best lines in the history of cinema.
And here are a couple more pictures. Another poster, And the Iron Mole Itself.

How may Steampunk people are there? Does anybody have any idea how to count us all? Before suggesting to Ken Wales that he contact his buddies in power at Disney about doing a Steampunk movie, they might want to know how many of us there are out here. The Bigger the audience, the more likely it will be that they will produce a movie. Any ideas?

Go on then, I'll start. One. Yep, one here also... This might take some time, maybe we should ask the steampunk Kwisatz Haderach - THE ONE TRUE STEAMPUNK!Anyone have his number?... On a serious note, I don't think actual numbers matter, just that the demographic exists and is big enough to be of interest. I think the film industry is well aware of steampunk, and there have already been some strongly steampunk themed movies, with a lot of dabbling in between. Any amount of prompting may not make a difference, it all comes down to what the "beancounters" think they can earn out of any given project ( and hence why so many movies are bastardised to generate profit). Tell him there are eleventy-billion steampunks. Unverifiable, but sounds like a large number. I do miss those movies...
