Welcom Gogglers, Gogglettes and Coglings..! Welcome to this dozenth* GC! To shake things up a little, we'll try something different this time! We'll have none of that fancy brass and wood this time! The only allowed build material is paper..! Get your printers working, or get handy with your ruler, protractors, and other drawing aids. We'll be doing some 3d model making.. Papercraft or pepakura is what it's all about.. go ahead and get creative - any build is permissable - vehicles, buildings, weapons or other props, anything goes. Design your own model, build an existing pepakura model or go completely nuts and mangle, distort or combine models.

To get you started; a simple google search for pepakura + an object you're interested in is likely to produce a ton of useful results. Here are a few basic sites to help get you started:

http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/
http://papercraftparadise.blogspot.com
http://papercraftparadise.blogspot.com/
http://www.papercraftmuseum.com/
http://paperkraft.blogspot.com/

Da Rules - Paper Jam Edition:

  • Paper is the only permissible build material. To keep things as equal as possible, limit yourself to standard printer paper (A4 / letter size)
  • You may use as many sheets of [a[er as necssary for your project.
  • Of course you can use glue, tape or similar materials to keep things together.
  • You can print models pre-colored, or color them yourself using whatever method works best for you.
  • You do not have to be a gentleman to enter this challenge. Scallywags and Ladies allowed.
  • You must post in this thread that you are participating to be counted in the challenge.
  • Only one entry per person please.
  • You may use what ever tools to build your creation that are at your disposal. Ie: jackhammer, glue, TNT, screwdriver (sonic or not), etc.
  • Challenge closes June 15th. A winner will be selected by popular vote after the deadline has passed, the poll will be up after the weekend.
  • Have Fun!!

EDIT: Rules Addendum:

  • Paperclips and other such small fasteners are allowed as structural aids or as axles, pivot points, counter balances, etc.
  • No cardstock or cardboard! If you need thicker sheets, just glue a bunch of 'm together!  Cheesy

No card stock? mmmm

Does that count the lightweight 'cardstock' that is made to go through the average home printer?

No card board seems OK.

It might be easiest, rather than checking if different thickness's of card are acceptable, to just assume regular printer paper only and work from that.

I really look forward to seeing what comes out of this one, it's a novel idea Cheesy

I do believe many papercraft sites recommend using lightweight cardstock, however that would still appear to be against the rules.

I'll probably be making something for this, but as of yet I have no idea what to make.

Since I'm new, are we required to post a thread of our progress, or is it just a nice thing to do?

Great idea! Count me it.

Just to clarify - can we paint the finished product? It could certainly add a bit of substance to the piece.

OK, this is NOT my entry, but I thought I'd play with the concept over a glass of wine and the first ep of Downton Abbey s2 that started here tonight.

So here's my first experiment in paper.. A4 barrelled pistol  Wink

It appears the rules allow paint.

I intend to paint my entry.

However I think in order to show that our creation was made from paper, we should post a picture with and without paint.

It wasn't....imagine coming into your child's modestly sized bedroom and finding life-size (as in up to 20 foot long) dinosaurs in 3D, standing everywhere.....  My mom was quite confused on how to handle the situation because it cost her only a few bucks in paper (got a couple crates of paper at auction) and it showed my talent....but it made one heck of a gigantic mess.

I had a juvenile brachiosaur (the 20 footer), a young tyranosaur, (a 15 footer) a carnotaurus, a hand full of smaller ones, a dimorphodon flying from the ceiling, and for the heck of it I made an australopithecene which I carried around with me for a couple of weeks.   Grin

Did your Mother Take any pictures? Cause that would truly be a sight to see.

As for the competition I will tentatively throw my hat into the ring. I have never worked with paper in a non mache form before and I am likely to be quite busy over the next while but what the heck!
