Steampunk Narwhal... what a wonderful combination!

« on: May 24, 2012, 12:48:46 am »

I am 12 years old, and I have not seen any children sized steampunk clothes. I am four-foot something and 78 pounds. If anyone sees a website or store with steampunk clothes in child sizes please reply with the link or name of store.

You shouldn't really be looking for "steampunk" clothes. Rather, look for clothing that you think would look good, or matches what you are going for. Surplus and wilderness stores have done great for me so far, best of luck!

You're how old?

Good lord I don't think I was even allowed to choose my own clothes at twelve. It was so long ago I can't really remember. Well on a practical note, (if this is even a choice) try and keep it cheap because obviously you're probably going to outgrow them fairly quickly I would imagine. I have seen kids outfits, but I think a lot of the time they were probably made especially for them and many items labelled Steampunk tend to be a tad overpriced.

I don't know what style you have in mind, smaller sized Newsboy caps, sometimes called Baker Boy can be found fairly easily (they're still often marketed for women, don't worry about that they're exactly the same) Kids waistcoats are a bit of a specialist thing, they tend to turn up in wedding type shops, but again hideously pricey if brought new. So something second hand perhaps if you can source it, they sometimes turn up on Ebay. Or if you know someone that can sew, or fancy learning yourself maybe.

Shirts shouldn't be too much of a problem, and neither should some styles of trousers again depending on what you are going for. The newsie style is one that's quite popular with the youngsters and obviously it works well with people around your age.

The clothes in the BW picture are great! (except for the smoking and the gun, if it's a real gun)
Don't worry about fitting clothes. Back in the days kids would get clothes from your older brothers or sisters. And they had a lot of them. If you where the youngest, you would wear 5th or 6th hand clothes.

As for the "theme" you could go for. As Argus Fairbrass mentioned, newsboy could be a choice. Also shoe shine boy or hotdog vender. A bit more towards child labour, cole worker.
Or you could go for a "steamboy" look.

Yup, damn tough from what I can gather. That picture is entitled street gang Springfield Massachusetts 1918. The dress style hadn't changed much from the previous century. Smoking was common back then, as was gambling.

Erm, neither of which I encourage obviously, ahem.

I guess the gangs were essentially their version of a union. Competition for paper rounds and the like was pretty fierce and led to disputes. Often these disputes were settled in a traditional manner, with baseball bats at dawn etc. Aye, little acorns allright, still it's a great look.

Wait a minute. My grandfather used to say something like:"When I was a kid, we didn't do stupid things. We weren't violent against eachother." Also:"smoking, gambling and drinking is bad. We never did those things when I was young. We were fine young lads, that's what we were"
Yeah right grandfather.  Grin
Kabar2 is right though, kids back then were more responsible. Mainly because their causes had an equal effect. You got caught stealing, you got a punishment from either your parents or another adult.

Lol, well I'm sure for a lot of them that was true, as I'm sure it's true for a lot of them today. I'm confident the op is a fine example of upstanding youth. But y'know it can depend on your area and start in life. In 1911 for example, a certain notorious New York child gang named The Brooklyn Rippers, had amongst their ranks a 12 year old boy by the name of Alphonse Capone.

Little acorns indeed!  Cheesy
