I just finished reading this book called The Whitechapel Gambit... It was an interesting read because it told a steampunk story from the point of view of a child laborer. It wasn't set in Victorian times, but the setting and the slang used really gave the feel of it.. If you like your steampunk on the dystopian side, this might be a good one for you...
Just to let folks know, I found this as a kindle freebie..I don't know if it's in physical print..

I know there's a book called Whitechapel gods, but not sure if they're related...where'd you find it free? Wouldn't mind having something new to read.

It's £1.91 on Amazon UK.
Sounds interesting - could you tell us a little more?

The set up is the English type people have retreated underground, and live in a world where they have giant clockwork "suns" to light the darkness, they are also fighting to conquer the people above, who seem to have an Incan/Mayan origin. The main character is a boy, who after an industrial accident when working with one of the suns, is adopted by one of the "knights". He is taught how to intrigue and that's all I can really say without spoiling any of the story..
