A while ago I made a ring-mounted pepperbox gun for the current Gentleman's Challenge, and had some inquiries about how it was made, so here's a WIP/How-to for the second one. This will be shorter and less chunky than the first as it is for feminine fingers. Here is the original: It starts with a cheap brass-coloured ebay ring, which has to be filed down to make it flat on top. The barrel is made from a brass pipe manifold. They're very good for steampunk projects because (a) they're brass, (b) they're cheap (£2.50 with delivery), (c) they look very gun-like, and (d) they're compatible with standard pipe-work and pipe-fittings. They're a bit too long to use as they are, so I cut them down by about 5mm. This time I used my new dremel rip-off, the first one was done with a hacksaw. These manifolds have a hollow back, so need to be mounted onto something with a flat base that can be glued to the ring. I used empty size 12 shotgun ammo; they're a nice fit and can be obtained for free if you know a farmer (I met one on an archaeological dig who offered me a shipping containers-worth since they were littering his land. I only took a small bag). You will also need primers for the mini-bullets. These can be removed by poking them out from the inside. After that you just glue it all together. I didn't have time to get any pictures of this since the glue dries so fast, but its fairly obvious how it all fits together. The ammo tips are M4 dome nuts, and the trigger is a bent bit of sheet brass that I made for the first one but didn't use for some reason. The diamond pattern on it was done with a £3 etching pen. And here is a mountain of finished pictures:

Very nice. Using old shot gun shells is a great idea.

That is a well put together piece there but, PLEASE modify your original post - you are English afterall!
Its NOT a 12 gauge shotgun shell BUT a 12 BORE shotgun CARTRIDGE, cartridges belong in guns, shells belong in artillery pieces and its not a "bullet head" but just a bullet!
Not very often does the pedant in me come out, but sometimes it does get slightly enraged!

Duly modified. Glad you all like them. Next on the list; some nice boxes with velvet lining and small tools.

I like it! A couple of questions though... Which way do the bullets fit into the cylinder? It looks like lead-down, which means that you'd shoot yourself in the hand every time it fired? And also, where are you getting the pipe manifolds from? I've had a quick google, and all I can turn up is the long "bar" manifolds, or rather expensive pub-issue beer dispensing things that looks nothing like yours!?

Excellent, excellent work, if you dont mind I'm going to 'borrow' your idea and put it in the roleplay game i'm working on. If it makes you feel better I tend to say gauge as well, it comes from playing too many rpgs written in the US.

I found some on eBay.co.uk, searching for "brass manifold": http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/22mm-4-WAY-BRASS-MANIFOLD-NEW-8mm-10mm-port-solder-capillary-endfeed-old-type-/190582883594?pt=UK_DIY_Materials_Plumbing_MJ&var=&hash=item72180e825eThere's a few others, too. Oddly enough, nothing like it turns up on the US side.

That is the place I bought the first one from. The second one was from someone else on ebay (who also sells 2-hole versions) and didn't seem as nice (a bit rougher round the drilled holes and not as polished on the outside) but that may have been luck of the draw. The bullets go in the regular way, but unfortunately poke out of the end of the barrel. If I had a big pillar drill I'd re-drill the holes to make them a bit deeper, but 8mm holes are a bit beyond my £20 rotary tool. As for idea stealing; go for it. After all, I stole it off other people: Initial inspiration came from this 19th century original, which was posted on the non-steampunked guns thread (I think): Unfortunately, the only replica available costs a whopping $580 (Although it is solid silver with moving parts). This one on Etsy was a big inspiration. Its much better made than mine, and the barrel spins! Again unfortunately, I couldn't afford the not-unreasonable £80 they wanted for it. Incidentally, when I went to get the above image link, I found that they've made some very affordable resin replicas of their awesome version(unfortunately no spinning): http://www.etsy.com/listing/98502488/gun-ring-aged-brass-acrylic-static-prop?ref=v1_other_1Thanks again for all the positive feedback. I have a box for the smaller one, and am currently working on some fake customs labels and bullet cartons.

Some very nice craftsmanship. Well done sir! But I have to say, not to be a spoil-sport, but those things would hurt like the devil if you actually fired one.

First off; thanks to everyone who voted for my ring gun in the last Gentleman's Challenge! Second, I have begun boxing them up. Continuing the low budget theme, I managed to get two boxes off ebay for less than £5. I was intending to have matched boxes with fitted interiors (inspired by the originals), but the first box I ordered was too small for the larger gun. You can see some original boxes that I'm copying here: The smaller gun only just fits in the smaller box, so I didn't have room to do a fancy fitting. Instead, I decided to make this a practical traveling case, and have the bullet cartons hold the gun in place (which they do very well). The theme for the packaging is that they were made by a French company operating within the International district of Shanghai (Why? Because the original guns are French, and Chinese writing looks cool). Since both boxes had flower decoration I decided to make the sunflower/daisy motif from the smaller box into the company logo (which helps tie in the interior and exterior). The second box is much larger (although not as nicely made), and as such I'm able to do a fancier interior. This one is still a work in progress (it still needs fabric covering, a lid-label and a small brass tool) but you can see the basic internal layout (cut into a sheet of foam padding from the box our oven came in):

Makes for a nice set.
May I suggest taking a piece of cloth and using it to cover the foam. Basically, just wrap the foam with the cloth and then push the pieces into their position.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks. I am intending to give it a blue velvet covering, but I need to get the small tool first so that I can complete the cut out.
