If you read the description of this piece, I think you'll see what's going on. An exerpt:
Quote
A total if 5, that's right FIVE, hexagonal hardened steel beads; each measuring 9/16ths of an inch across. This is no lightweight piece of metal jewelry.

Each bead is imported from an exotic manufacturing location in the far East.

I did read it. I'm still convinced it's a joke.

Unless five nuts from China is a reference to something I'm missing?

Cause nothing says 'Steampunk' like wearing a square on your finger.

I see nothing wrong with that, after a bit of judicious modding.  What would it look like if I took a dremel to it to turn the case casting into a filigree latticework?

But as it is?

Not quite SP, but not the worst non-SP item advertised as such that I've come across.

Persons intending to travel by open carriage should select a seat with their backs to the engine, by which means they will avoid the ashes emitted therefrom, that in travelling generally, but particularly through the tunnels, prove a great annoyance; the carriage farthest from the engine will in consequence be found the most desirable.

That's my point. From the description I thought the joke was fairly obvious, even without looking at any of his other listings.

In my opinion this item is a deliberate attempt to win the Least Steampunk Item award, and should be disqualified accordingly.  Cheesy

This has got to be my favorite thread on the forum.  I've laughed, I've cried...I've seen some absolutely hideous items for sale.  Thank goodness I have all the hideous items I need right now.

It's nice to see posters using some creativity in their critiques.  Really warms a person's heart.   Grin

I vote pink fluffy phone for the worst of the lot.

Some interesting stuff.  Not steampunk

and "psychobilly"?  The whole genre is new to me - not that I intend to further the acquaintance.

I agree with Mrs. Whatsit  and I get to see some really good stuff to as I browse.  I quite like the hand painted gloves that i can't afford right now,

Ooh, these must be steampunk,
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
the only way you could describe jet fighters as antique would be if you time travel
and time machines are steampunk

right?

What's really sad here is an item that seller has that could have gotten away with being labeled Steampunk, isn't.

maybe if enough cheap crap comes up we could buy them and have a challenge to see who can actually make the item steampunk. that would be a real challenge.

and "psychobilly"?  The whole genre is new to me - not that I intend to further the acquaintance.

Psychobilly is alright...in fact some of the music and bands do have some steamy elements to them.  Probably somewhere out there on the vast expanse of the internet there is a psychobilly forum looking at stuff tagged psychobilly asking why it is considered psychobilly.

My favorite part of this is in the description: "The entire sculpture is wired together so that when the wind blows through the feathers they rustle and make a beautiful sound." Something tells me the sound isn't going to be as beautiful as the seller is saying.

Like that beautiful "wind-against-corrugated-tin-roof" sound?

I've been following this thread for a while. I have a theory: I think "Steampunk" is the most searched word on Ebay and Etsy. Therefor, when you want your item (Steampunk or not) to attract as many people as possible, you have to put the word "Steampunk" in your discription.

Now, if you would excuse me, I have to find a proper outfit to match my pink rhinestone and fur telephone.

I vote for the car phone, and I insist that the hex-nut pendant be disqualified on the grounds that the creator is just taking the piss.

Also, does that fuzzy rhinestone telephone remind anyone else of a giant plushy virus?

Thanks for your vote Von Corax, But the voting was just to choose the first weeks winner. From here on, the winner will be chosen by the person who posted the previous weeks winning item.
Hopefully this will simplify what quickly became a very cumbersome system.

Oh my! This is going to be a very tough decision indeed.

I shall require a little more time to wince at these items some more.
