I Know that there have been a lot of "Not remotely Steampunk" topics on this forum before, but I think that we should have a bit of fun with it.
I propose a game to be played as follows.

Please post nominations for the Most Unsteampunk item listed as "Steampunk" on Ebay, Etsy, or any other selling website for that matter.

Each week, the most un-Steampunk item will be chosen, and posted in the gallery below.

The person that posted the winning item gets to select the winner the following week.


1./Please only post items that have the word Steampunk or Steam Punk in the description line.
2./The weekly winner cannot select an item that they have posted themselves as the following weeks winner.
3./Nominations can come from any online seller or sales site, not just Ebay or Etsy.

Steampunk? How?

I know we have many discussions here about what is and is not steampunk.  I think we can all agree that the above falls into the latter category.

James, I saw the White wedding hat, but i thought I had better limit the items I posted. Ironically the seller is selling two similar white, wedding hats. the one NOT described as steampunk, is much closer in pattern to a true top hat and therefore would be better deserving of the Steampunk description.

As for the shawl, I am lost for words, Not only is it not Steampunk, but in my humble opinion, it fails to be suitable for any genre of clothing that I have ever seen or imagined.
But with the description of "Post Apocalyptic Spinal Shawl psy punk wrap cardigan hippy grunge steampunk", I think that it is definately worthy of "Steampunkemogoth award" nomination, Five diverse styles in one description.

On the other hand, I could conceivably see the Wings sugar mold being used by a Steampunk Cake Maker who wanted to incorporate an Airship squadron Badge into the design.

Whilst I agree that those wing moulds could be used to make something steampunk, I don't agree with the seller's notion that they are SP in and of themselves.  Considering the ingenuity of members of the board, I'm sure pretty much *anything* could be utilised to make an SP something-or-other.  Which would then make this thread pretty pointless- 'I could make something SP out of that!'

Anyway; to have a point (other than being unduly awkward and argumentative) to my post;  

Why settle for a bunny bunny bunny bunny bunny rabbit (sorry, I'm rather fond of bunnies), when one can possess a steampunk elephant?



When I saw this I was hoping for something a) huge, b) elephant shaped and c) full of whirring gears and motion making it move around and make elephant noises.  Guess one out of three isn't too bad....

If you take a look at the shop for that seller, they have a section entitled Steampunk Charms containing 318 items, one or two of which are actually quite Steampunk. There are also 66 items described as steampunk in the "Other" section of the shop, these are not so steampunk, (Unless fish skeletons and violins have recently become more steampunk.)

Maets, Those two splendid little tincan figures fall into a category that I have come to think of as "Close but no Cigar" where someone has sincerely attempted to make something steampunk without actually having a strong understanding of what it is about, or possibly without having the necessary skills to achieve their ambitions.

I found this little gem that also falls into this category.

Stema, According top Google, is a range of hotels in the Mediterranean, so presumably "Stemapunk" is a subculture dedicated to the wearing of metallic face-plates whilst staying in those hotels.

If you VISIT THE STORE AND SEARCH FOR "STEAMPUNK" you will find 368 items of which the above is not the least steampunk.
(Of the 368, I found 22 items that, with a very generous definition of the term, could be considered vaguely Steampunk. However, I found several corsets that I imagine a Steampunk lady would be happy to wear, that were not described as steampunk.)

I know what you mean. I've browsed etsy a bit and found it quite confusing. There are some nice looking items for sale way too cheap, and then there's the nice looking items that are way overpriced, and then there's the totally confusing crap that I just don't understand at all.....

I kind of doubt that anyone is making money on there.
