While that's definitely NOT steampunk, I actually kind of like this  It makes me think of what the TARDIS might look like, if it's chameleon circuit were stuck to "purse." |

HAHAHAHAHAHA ahem, pardon me that was not ladylike, would someone please help me up off the floor. I would tend to give the robots a nod as a first attempt at found-object sculpture tho' I don't think the artist is ready to make sales yet. The undies and skull dress were random "attach every label so people view it" nonsense. The phone bag and glasses I think are quite creative tho' not my idea of steam or punk let alone steampunk The dune buggy I refuse to think about. BUT - a hat with feathers - yes that could be steampunk. This hat with feathers wins in my opinion if only because it made me laugh instead of cringe. |

My best friend keeps telling me I should put some of my Lovecraftian props up on Etsy for sale. But I don't know. After visiting Regretsy, and seeing more than a couple of threads like this, I'm afraid to go near the place.
I know what you mean. I've browsed etsy a bit and found it quite confusing. There are some nice looking items for sale way too cheap, and then there's the nice looking items that are way overpriced, and then there's the totally confusing crap that I just don't understand at all..... I kind of doubt that anyone is making money on there. Maets has started some sort of Brass Goggles Team on Etsy (I don't entirely understand it, as I've never dealt with Etsy from either side of the counter) which is restricted to actively-making Brass Goggles members; it's sort of an attempt to reclaim the "Steampunk" tag. There's a thread over in Tactile about it. |

Actually Will Rockwell started the Etsy group and I have been participating and helping as limited as it is.
Etsy may have a lot of crap, but it also has some very nice stuff. We are hoping to set a little higher standard for Etsy steampunk. I have only been selling on Etsy for six months. It has worked ok for me so far. Etsy is VERY easy to set up to sell from and many people do go to it looking for stuff. If you have something you think you would like to sell that is handmade by you than it might be worth a try.

I definitely second Maets here. I actually just bought my wedding ring from a guy in Australia through Etsy. Not steampunk, but a Celtic knotwork design. So you can find good stuff, if you know what you're looking for. |

The scary thing about this one, is that its not, as in many others, a case of cramming as many possible subculture names as possible into the title to attract possible buyers. This item is Steampunk and nothing else! It would appear that somebody actually thinks that this is Steampunk!! Add this to The Pink Bunny Ring, I can only conclude that pink rhinestones are Steampunk. When did Pink rhinestones become Steampunk? And why did nobody tell me? |

I suppose the fact that the item is creative, has more hand-made parts than machine-made, shows elements of uniqueness makes it more steampunk than just sticking something machine-made onto the inside of a clock.

these at least could be someone's idea of steampunk ish ness. The winged snake lady female also may not be your taste but it is at least in the ballpark. The pink phone on the other hand wouldn't recognize a ball let alone the park. PS The phone bag would be even better if you could link your cell phone to the reciever. |

Useful if you like sweating I guess and at least it would, hopefully, hold together longer than fabric might.... she'd be in a seriously bad mood afterwards though due to all the rubbing. Recommend folded hankies in each cup to avoid that

I should add that mundanes DO recognize real Steampunk when they see it. There is a rank based system which incorporated the number of hits to a page, thus allowing you to climb to the first page when someone performs a search. I can proudly say that Will Rockwell and myself, along with others like Steampunk 22 often times end up at the very top of the lists (also included is Skins N Hidez). Its a little bit of a fight because mass marketers from China and Korea tend to flood the Etsy forum with absolutely disgusting plastic garbage (500 items per shop?) labeled as "Steampunk". Their most creative items being knock-offs of Japanese artist Suekichi watches, and their laser cut bamboo /wooden iPhone cases. So its very much a fight between quality and volume. Readers do side with thr real stuff, even if they don't know what Steampunk is (quite often the case for my clientele). Also a good number of well known SP artists are on Etsy, to the point that in tech blogs and such, Etsy is now regarded "the place" to go find steampunk gadgets. So we are reclaiming the title. |
