Steampunk Submarine

Posted by Mr Addams

That's supposed to be a submarine? I thought it was, like, mummified medical waste or something… Huh

That one was posted by Rev. Jade, not myself, so credit where credit is due.
I thought that it looked like a Bubonic Conker.

I'm thinking; maybe we should take every photo posted in this thread, put them in another thread we could title 'Things that are not Steampunk' (in an homage to the Regretsy idea that preceded it) and sticky it.

That would then

a) give us all a laugh/migraine/make us shake our heads in wonder and amazement (delete as appropriate), and

b) might actually give the tools who create such works of tack and tomfoolery an idea of what the steampunk community think of as not being steampunk.

In addition to saving pictures of the weekly winners onto my photobucket account, so that the pictures will not be lost when the auction/sale ends, I have been saving some of the more noteworthy of the other entries, with a view to creating a "rogues gallery" of other contributions, Perhaps a monthly highlights list. But I an not sure if that justifies an entire separate thread.

Whilst Ebay and Etsy are the worst perpetrators of non steampunk items on sale as steampunk there are plenty of other online sales sites worthy of our ire.

I have changed the topic title to reflect this. I have also modified the text in the opening post.

Quote

I Know that there have been a lot of "Not remotely Steampunk" topics on this forum before, but I think that we should have a bit of fun with it.
I propose a game to be played as follows.

Please post nominations for the Most Unsteampunk item listed as "Steampunk" on Ebay, Etsy, or any other selling website for that matter.

Each week, the most un-Steampunk item will be chosen, and posted in the gallery below.

The person that posted the winning item gets to select the winner the following week.

1./Please only post items that have the word Steampunk or Steam Punk in the description line.
2./The weekly winner cannot select an item that they have posted themselves as the following weeks winner.
3./Nominations can come from any online seller or sales site, not just Ebay or Etsy.

Pictures of each weeks winning entry are also shown in this opening post.

We're back on an octopi theme apparently....

"This striking illustration of an octopus is printed on a page from a vintage 1940s dictionary."

Good, she has a dictionary- she should look up the definition for "striking". I doubt it includes bad clip-art of an octopus. Oh, wait, she may already have sold that page...  Roll Eyes

Anyone else think the book she cut that page from would have been worth far more than her "art"?

Could've been worse. At least she didn't try to pass it off as Cthuhlu.

But what exactly is a "Steampunk Octopus"? I see no goggles, top hat, or even gears.

She could at least have put it on the dictionary page for 'Octopus'..or even 'Kraken' at a push...
although the page she has chosen, that starts with the word 'Inneficacy', is probably more appropriate given that it's definition is "The state or quality of being incapable of producing a
desired effect or result."

Better yet, the page ends with "infernal". I am also pleased to note that this large alphabetic range on one page indicates that at least it isn't one of those grand old unabridged dictionaries she's breaking up and defiling. Still, it is a serviceable book, and she therefore belongs in the same cell as the "nottooshabbt.com" vandal. (Don't look at nottooshabby.com, it will drive up her hit count, make you sad for the poor "improved" furniture, and you can't do anything about it.)

Well, So far, the only nomination that we have this week is the "Steampunk" Octopus dictionary.
Unless we have a lot of last minite nominations before I get home on Sunday Evening, it could be a one horse (Octopus?) Race.

Disposable lighters. They're not just steampunk, they're also FIERCE!

It probably holds enough gas to light one ciggy before the flame dies.

I'm thinking, with an appropriate valve fitted to it, and a length of copper tubing going up the finger, hand, wrist and part-way along the arm fitted to a small reservoir, that would be pretty cool.  Just means you'd have to hold your arm in a fixed position.... which does have its precedents you know:

It's making a statement, but what is it really saying?

From the other pics, it looks like the striker wheel turns, but the rest is cast as a solid piece.

If it does work, I wonder how well the body of it conducts heat.

Steampunk = Animals covered in yellow sparklies
I believe that is in the Steampunk Bylaws.  No one reads the fine print these days.

On second thought, the hippo looks angry about this whole situation as well.

Apparently, this is not only steampunk but also 'Goth', 'Rock' and 'Fetish'.

Because nothing says any of those things more than an armless T-shirt with the number '69' tastefully laid on in fake diamonds....

Perhaps someone should buy enough "steampunk" items to fashion an outfit for the Asylum masquerade, call it "Steampunk by Etsy" they must however glue some additional cogs on!
