Life is a steam powered rollercoaster

« on: May 04, 2012, 07:16:01 pm »

I recently ordered these as the first part of my steampunk costume and I intend to modify them to make them look more steam punk.

I am just after suggestions on what materials I could use to help modify it.

All suggestions welcome Smiley

I would say leather for the straps.
You could also cover the frame in leather, or paint it brass colored.
You could make a little magnifying attachment.
Anything but randomly sticking gears all over it...
A couple of gear stickers as an accent is fine, but please don't just randomly stick them everywhere.

That's a good point actually. Where has the ultimate goggles thread disappeared to? I can't seem to find it in tactile and the search engine's not turning it up either. Surely it hasn't been deleted!

Aha nice one. I think there are a few examples of that flip up style in there somewhere.

a contrast of brass and copper paint, and glued on brass rivet heads will take you most of the way there. Starform stickers could lend a nice accent.

I've found that the plastic used for the main body of that type of goggle tends to shrug off paint like a thing that's very good at shrugging paint off.

To get a surface that is a bit more durable, I coated the frame in polyurethane wood glue.

The results make for an interesting texture, as seen here:-

I covered mine in cloth and lit them up like a Christmas tree:

I found that the plastic is soft enough that a reasaonably thick sewing needle allows you to stick directly to it. Unfortunately, I also found what Dr Quack states and not I get a nice black mark on my head every time I wear them.

i would suggest, these being welders goggles, you add a magnify glass that pivots near the corner of one of the eyes. thought i guess that'd cause problems with the hinged tinted section. just a thought... and copper finish.

One way around the paint shrugging might be to use a vinyl dye. It actually soaks in and recolors the plastic, instead of just sitting on the surface. Some brands even have metallic colors.

It should work okay on the goggle's rubbery type plastic, but I'd grab an extra pair and experiment a bit to be sure.

One other suggestion- those small vent covers on the bottom? Turn them into control knobs. Smiley
