I got more work done on the Jacob's Ladder today also.

I'm going to add some brass painted aluminum angle on the corners to cover the raw
plywood edges. The back of the box will be removable for access to the working parts.
I'm going to use a dark red mahogany stain on the wood.

The posts are converted lamp shade finials. I'm hoping that I can use the finials themselves
to carry the current to the electrodes. I like the way it looks without extra wires on the top.
The 'insulators' are made from Corian ( the countertop stuff ) glued up, then turned round and
polished on my ( now not working ) lathe. I drilled through the finials for the electrodes and I
have a set screw on the back for adjusting the gap between the electrodes. You can see
the black dots on the top photo. I had them set in place backwards and didn't notice before
I took the picture.

I've inset the knife switch. It will use a 12vDC transformer to lower the current to safer
levels and the relay will control the neon sign transformer powering the electrodes. Insetting
the switch makes it look less... ummm.... bulky on top of the box. The ceramic base is about
1/2" thick.

I've got a ceramic lamp socket to install and I need to find a 'collar' to put around it to dress it
up. It will be set into a hole in the box top.

I find myself thinking I need a large voltmeter for the front, something in the 6" neighborhood.
Right in the center.  Also wondering if the meter will.... umm... jump around as the plasma
arc climbs up the electrodes and breaks and starts over at the bottom.... ( the movement
would be cool it it occur... ) The meter would probably be in the circuit before the high
voltage transformer.

Anyone have any other suggestions for the front? I can't help but think I need more on the
front of the box.

Looking fantastic, C!  That red stain will really set off the brass.

Perhaps a nameplate on the front?  Definitely some heavy brass handles for the ends - perhaps mounted through industrial-looking insulators...  Beautiful work, I must say.

Good start.  Will the ladder be enclosed in glass?

If I can find a glass cylinder big enough for the right price yes...

If not then no.

Enclosing it will actually help your arc (creates a shaft of excited air).   And you can get away with perspex, or polycarbonate as well.  Just a thought.

Enclosing it might happen....

Its a case of finding something that will work at the right price.

YAY the new voltmeter works!

I have to get a litle creative mounting it but it will cover the entire hole cut
for the other non-working meter....

I'm the tiniest bit concerned that your switch may be a little close to the EHT electrode.

You don't want the arc finding your body to be an easier path to earth than the rods.

That would be bad!!

High voltages are lots of fun till someone takes a jab, gets knocked unconscious and is then poisoned by the Ozone.

Not trying to rain on your parade, just offering a note of caution.
I want to see it working.

Safely, please.

Might not be a bad idea to switch it on and then plug it in the first time just to see what happens
from a distance....

I'll keep that in mind.

Ok the box has been stained. I've got everything but the switch for the light bulb and I am finding my self less than eager to put ina chrome toggle..... I cannot find a brass toggle in the US?

Anyone know of a source in the states?

And I still have some empty space on the front of the box....... suggestions?
( or do you need some pictures before you offer opinions...? )

I find key hole guards make for nice accents.  Can be used around a switch as well.

I did use a chrome toggle, but with the brass it looks ok.

Yikes!

I agree that the switch seems very close to the back end of the electrode, and your hand will be even closer as you're working it.

Possibly a safer place for your switch?

Yes. Definitely, the switch should be on the side of the box, rather than the top.

As I said somewhere else, if you suddenly hear bright lights and smell a buzzing, and everything tastes purple, you've gotten far too close to the electrodes.

Plasma disk?

I have considered two mini plasma disks with a brass ring around them

..... I'm wondering if I could wire them into the 12v transformer too....
That way there would not be batteries.

What kind of magnetic/electrical interference could the transformer put out
when turned on?

I know it can interfere with radio signals ( TV, cellphones, radio.... )

Would it damage an LED photo frame?

If I could even find one the right size......  Undecided

Coupled with a perpetual calendar on the other side it could be a time viewer....
