I just got this in the mail...I'm about to work on my RAF target fascinator...

I believe the term is 'roundel' rather than target Smiley

The Few would have been a lot fewer if they had painted targets on the side of their planes.

You've got to admit though, it does kind of say "AIM HERE". Tongue

Which is why there were never any Mods in Belfast! Would you walk around with a target on the  back of your parka?

Many thanks, Mr. West!

I overdyed a pair of welding gloves, then used my fledgling leathercrafting skills to mount a bubble level, a compass/sundial from Harbor Freight, and a small copper-colored LED flashlight to one hand, then made pockets and loops on the other for a set of mini pliers and assorted screwdrivers. I'll need to rejigger the pliers and the flashlight (they're loose), but all in all it worked nicely.

May we see an up-close image of those gauntlets?

Epic gauntlets and a utilikilt are always a good decision.

Just thought I would share a few photos of Myself and Mrs. Voltin of the time we spent at the Lake Superior Train Museum located in the Historic city of Duluth, Minnesota.

It was great to see the William S. Crooks up close. It was the first Steampowered locomotive built in Minnesota in 1861 and operated out of my hometown of Pig's Eye/Saint Paul.

It was over 90 degrees out that day and very humid. But we had fun all the same!

As requested, shots specifically of the gauntlets:

Closeup of the compass/sundial (the shot of the flashlight and level was blurry beyond excuse...)

Aaaand the other gauntlet:

Pliers and diagonal cutters (the leather dye I used turns out not to be recommended for suede - you can see that it has rubbed off on the handles, though I kinda like the effect):

And the screwdriver kit - this bit I'd like to redo with actual stitching instead of rivets.

Thanks for the kind words - I'm in awe of some of the stuff I've seen on this thread, and look forward to developing my own fledgling maker skills...

I don't know, the riveting does lend a certain charm to it.  It looks functional and adds a bit of armor to it...in a word, forgive me here, it's quite "riveting"!  Grin

...Sorry about that everyone, couldn't help it.

I do see why you would like to use stitching, it does look a bit loose.  However, if you had wanted to keep the rivets, could you just stitch the spaces for the tools tighter on each side of every slot, or do you think the stitches in addition to the rivets would be too much?  Perhaps using a metallic thread in the same color as the rivets might still make it stand out, but not so much, making it look more like the edges of metal paneling?  Just tossing out some suggestions.

Yeah, I like the riveting. I also prefer the design of the one gauntlet that has the pliers and screwdrivers. The other might be too sparse? Maybe? I know, add a dremel attachment to it with a power supply backpack! Hmmm, that may be a bit too much. I like them though, nothing better than multifunctional gauntlets.

Yeah, this project spent a fair bit of time in the "hypothetical" stage, then went from planning to execution much more quickly than I really would have liked. I do like the look of rivets - I'm working on a set of gaiters that are chock-full of rivets, pix forthcoming as I put together a WIP post... but the screwdriver panel and the flashlight attachment are both looser than I'd have liked. Stitching plus rivets would be the best of both worlds - more secure loops (and more even...), perhaps with rivets marking different sections (nutdrivers, standard, Philips). I also need to add snap flaps to keep the pliers in place. Still, not bad for a Steampunk 101 project if I do say so myself.

And the left one's more spare than I'd intended - but I ran out of both interesting things to rivet onto the gauntlet and time to get the things riveted on. Now that I've got some time before SteamCon, I may be able to get a couple of gauges/indicator dials put together, or maybe one of those plasma disks with a battery pack.

Thanks for the kind words and suggestions!

Amazon has "pocket" plasma disks for about $17. Though, I haven't been able to find any red ones. They seem to only have blue, green and "rainbow" in the smaller disks.

I believe the only colors avaliabe are Blue, Green, Orange, Pink, White, and Rainbow.

Here is a link http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lumin-Disk-6-Plasma-Plate-Light-Show-Party-Home-Decor-Respond-to-Music-or-Touch-/300710710166?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item4603c14b96

These are a little spendy however and if you shop around I am sure you can find any of those for under $20.

I replaced my flux capacitor that was originally rainbow with a green one and my wife took the Rainbow color one so it all worked out in the end.

Here is a pick of the Rainbow one.

I found out making it that the Plasma disks fit perfectly inside the cage window of old Watchmen's Detex Clocks  Grin

I was inspired by Professor Maelstromme and her male friend's (I forget his name) "Temporal Isolation Devices" that they had with them at the Steampunk exhibit in Oxford.
