Illustration by Daniel Le Noury from the childrens book "Moon Journey" by Jay Williams. Inspired by Jules Verne and published in 1976. Who says Steampunk can't be colourful!  Cheesy

Sadly he has only just passed beyond the veil of this mortal coil.

His artwork has been inspiring as well as entertaining in Heavy Metal and other publications.

Yup, that is how I found out about him.  Neil Gaiman eulogized him a bit in his blog.

You are in for a breathtaking journey of discovery. His drawing and colouring were unparalleled, and inspiration to dozens of modern comic artists. He is sorely missed.

My only regret for him is that when he made the animation of Little Nemo he didn't design it in the style of the original Winsor McCay strips:

It's over 100 years old, so I reckon that qualifies as 'ancient'. This, however, is only just over 50 years old but more steampunk:

NO.

It's a Heath Robinson. From one of the Professor Branestawm books. There is some 'debate' as to which inspired the other/which came first, but what does it matter, we get both.
