Hi, I am trying to design a set of Epaulettes/and or Shoulder marks and am asking for ideas,  I have the idea of a number of gears, around a central ships wheel for the main set and varying gears for higher and lower ranks.  Any Ideas?

Perhaps silver or gold covered cogs building from one to three small cogs for distinguishing between ranks. There are loads of websites and books showing epaulette designs which could be adapted. Some are really quite flamboyant.
