While there's tea, there's hope -Sir Arthur Pinero

« on: March 04, 2012, 06:52:20 am »

So, despite having to put my thumb-drive project on temporary hold, I have gone ahead with another project I had in mind.  I wanted a box to keep my table-top gaming tools in (dice, figures, etc).  I am also planning on using the experience from this project to create a complete set of alchemical boxes, chests, etc for my Steampunk laboratory.

I purchased a marvelous cigar (Drew Estates "Tabak Especial 'Colada'") and since it was the last cigar in the box they let me take the box for free.  It was such a great box that I decided to use it in my project.  I sanded the top, front, and two sides, but I left the bottom and back alone.  I then wood-burned an alchemical circle into the top (The circle is based on the anime "Full Metal Alchemist".  I found the exact design on "Deviant Art").  I then used the darkest wood-stain I could find to give the box a close-to-original color.  I finished it with some Tung Oil.  Then, I placed antiqued nickel feet and corner protectors, and an oriental-style clasp on it, and I replaced the original lid-chain with a smaller, more decorative one.  Below are pictures of the finished project.

Looks awesome, I'm sure even some of the ladies around here would love it as a jewelry box. I always liked how the simplest mods can really make a project stand out nicely

Thanks guys!  I'm very proud of this project.  It is simple, yet elegant...and it was fun.  I can't wait until next week's D&D game where I can show it off, lol.

Professor Cogsworthy, I am not certain why you cannot see the pictures, or why Google would give you a security warning.  I am truly puzzled about it.

To everyone else, thank you all so much for the compliments.  It took quite a bit of work, with skills I haven't used in years, so I am pleased with how well it turned out and with all the compliments I have received.  I intend to make a few more of these eventually, as well as an "apothecary chest".  I want to make a small portable alchemy lab and with as well as this project turned out, I am sure the lab will be perfect when I'm done with it.

Well done sir. I have been researching alchemy type designs for a few years now and have a friend who is planning on making a brewery/alchemy lab in the near future. Keep us in the loop on further projects! Can't wait to see them.

I have also begun doing quite a bit of research into alchemy, if for no other reason than to employ it as part of my Steampunk persona.  Also, although I don't have pictures yet, I have begun working on another smaller box.

I got the feet and corners at Michaels Arts & Crafts supply store.  I've also seen them online at Amazon and ebay.  They're "Jim Holtz idea-ology" brand.

On topic but a bit sideways if I may.     I've found that the larger-higher end grocery stores here in the Midwest (USA) likely have a tobacco counter and will generally be happy to give one the accumulating empty cigar boxes at no cost, dedicated tobacco stores do-will charge for such.

I have a small collection of many wonderful wooden boxes that sort out my small tools and bits but such could be utilized for the OP's purpose.

Good Hunting !
