Hi everyone!
So I wore my steam punk Librarian basic costume to Katsucon and got a lot of good responses (people loved the library cards in the hatband, and the keys hanging on the chain belts especially.)
Someone on these threads suggested a really awesome prop idea and I’m trying to figure out how to make it. The thought was a wrist or arm mounted device that could shoot a card catalog card, probably with some kind of spring load. There’s a kids toy kind of like that for a game called Yu-Gi-Oh where the plastic wrist mounted card holder will release a card into the person’s hand.  I don’t want to use the toy as a base, but I’d love to figure out how it might work, or what I might use for a base to make this myself. If I can find one cheep I'll buy it and take it apart to see how it works. In the meantime, I’m going to keep poking around, but any ideas on how I might go about this would be awesome!

Cheers!

See if you can find anything on how the library cards were made to shoot out
of the card drawers early in the first Ghostbusters movie. That would give you
almost a machine gun speed.... But it would quickly use up cards.... lol

Put one of these up your sleeve and it will shoot out a whole deck of cards.

$40.00

Thats a great idea! Card catalog cards are bigger than playing cards, but this could be a nice base if I can modify it to hold slightly bigger cards!

One of the newer variants of "Uno!" uses a machine in the middle of the table that shoots cards toward the players at random.

I haven't used one so I don't know how you could go about setting it off at will, but it may be cheaper than the $40 option above.

Those card dispensers work on a basic single flywheel propelled by a low power vDC motor.

You could find all the electronics needed at radioshack.

You would need to build a shell that would hold your cards with a spring plate to push the stack up as the top cards are dispensed, on top of that you would need to mount the motor and flywheel, which would be wired to a battery carriage, and simple as bob's your uncle you've got a card catalog shooter.

The rest is just cosmetics and how you want to dress it up.  I'd probably recommend an exposed mechanism on a leather bracer, with the battery carriage hidden in a pocket on the bracer.  Possibly also integrate a smart phone holster in the bracer which would give you a place to keep your phone and serve as a prop "control interface" for the device.

Were it mine I'd call it the "Forearm Mounted Dewey Knowledge Dissemination Device"

If I'm not mistaken, I think they said on the commentary that there was a guy behind the cabinet blowing compressed air into the drawers.

My thoughts after reading your description was to use a derringer device like they used in the
"Wild Wild West" TV series.

too add to what HeroOfThePeople said the fly wheel could be as simple as rubber wheel (I would say put it as close to the exit as possible unless you want to pull it out.) now the complex part comes in if you want to control how many cards come out at one time but even this is doable.  it's all about the right timing for size and the speed of the wheel and size of the card. once you know that timing you can program a microcontroller to shoot as many cards as you'd like.

OR, if  you want to do an "Absent Minded Professor" kind of Steampunk Comedy routine, use the spring and some of the gears out of a Brass Clock Mechanism to power the device and let it just spew out a bunch of cards at once!   Grin

Card holdout is what they are commonly referred as. I just started trying to make one it seems pretty easy, using scissor arm attached to an Actuator to push it in and out.

You are not! Smiley I just pulled out my DVD last night and ran the commentary because I remembered that they talked about it! Correct!

The holdout style isn't exactly what I was thinking but now that I know what its called and I'm looking at them online, I think I like this better than the idea of "Shooting" cards.

This one particularly looks cool.....

Needle Index Cards, may also be worth investigating http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Needle_card

A pretty steamy approach to a non-computerised searchable database.
