While caged bulbs are more accurately Naval, I'd say a recessed fluorescent with a diffuser sheet and then one of those decorative grilles posted earlier to finish it off would look damned spiff, and you even have space above the ceiling in which to mount it. You could do the rope-light in pipe around the walls about a foot down, as well, to add some indirect light near the walls. The combination would likely be very even lighting which is good in a workspace.

One needs to be red and flash...... for when you run out of cheese dip or brass polish.  You do need a red one for when you are rigged for red during night operations. Which reminds me: Periscope? I was afraid to mention this earlier. Ha! Great Minds think alike! If you do it correctly, you could have it next to your work station and have it peep at whoever is at the door! Aaah yes...a periscope. That'd look brilliant (not that we're pressuring you or anything!) |

Brilliant !! I like it. Maybe not above the desk though. And I might not want it retractable. It would take up storage space above the room. What could I use to make a nice brass periscope??? |

How about some voice pipes/speaking tubes? Link them up to the outside of the ship instead of a door bell. You could also have a ships control column - but instead of the speed you can have tea, coffee, rum, etc. You're going to need to build a bigger workshop soon |

I went to Lowe's today looking for lights. I found this one for $12.  It kept calling to me. It was saying "please paint me brass and put me in your submarine". I walked away. But I could hear it calling to me from two aisles away. The price was low enough that I could buy more than one and have several sources of light in the room. So I walked out of the store with three of them. I was thinking today that if I had decided to paint my workshop like it was a new submarine, I could have saved myself a lot of work. But I started down this road and I might as well continue on it. Besides, I think having the submarine weathered and old looking will make it a very unique room. I spray painted the rivet areas with enamel metallic brass paint. The enamel will resist the alcohol that I will use to dissolve the acrylic brown paint.     Next I applied thinned acrylic brown paint where ever I thought I would expect to see corrosion.   Tomorrow I start with the alcohol. (When I sober up, I will work some more on the room. LOL) |

Looking good. This is just a suggestion, and personally I don't think it's a very good one, but if you wanted to you could put a light in the periscope and use it as a sort of pose-able lamp, that way it wouldn't just be an attractive looking furnishing to bang your head on!

Not a bad idea. I might add the periscope after I add all of my gauges and small pipes. I need to see where I might have room for a periscope. Someone else suggested having lights along the wall as part of the pipe system. Pretty cool idea.  |

I just saw something that could work that is "similar" in design in another Tactile thread: http://brassgoggles.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,35546.0.htmlI like the idea of the pipes or cylindrical lights mounted on the walls. It's different than the epected scenery but doesn't destroy the steampunkian submarine look. Edit: Just thought of these type of "fixtures" that were used on them wooden type ships. Use the cylindrical type lighting in them and you got yourself some lighting! |

Thank you ladies and gentlemen....... I started on the overhead beams. I want a red iron look with a little bit of rust. Base coat brown. Remember someone suggested that I add some strips of wood so that my beams look like I-beams. Good idea. I'm going to do that. So now I can paint and not worry about getting a little paint on the ceiling.      I also played around with some ideas for the submarine window. I had some internet art printed out on a transparency. Thank you to the artists who created these fish. One of the things on the transparency was an underwater scene.  I placed the underwater scene behind one of the fish. In the day time it looked pretty good.  At night time the fish would show up with a very bright light behind it.  With no light, or light coming from the inside of the room, the fish look bad. At night time a simple picture in the window looks good.  I might go with a clear blue background and transparent fish. And at night time I can have a light outside if I need one. I'm not sure, I'm just experimenting and thinking. |

I like the mechanical fish a lot, and if you have variations in hue and color in the blue background you might have something there.
I dont know why, but I always loved the color of primer...
