I painted the inside with wood sealer.

I have a little problem with the big pipe.  The outside paper covering on the cardboard tubes wrinkled when I painted it with the water based sealer.  I thought maybe after the first coat it was sealed.  I tried a second coat and it still wrinkled.  I will have to figure out how to solve this problem.

I started painting the walls with Martha Stewart metallic paint.  The color is Pyrite.

I can't just roll on the paint.  I have to brush paint around all of the rivets and along the ceiling.
Very time consuming......

I can't see how bad the wrinkles look, but the structure could be used as a rust over paint over rust look. Did you want to paint it like it is painted pipes or bare metal?

Prof Cogsworthy:  Your pipe idea is great.  That would look nice.  But it might be too much in the way of conveniently storing boxes.

You could use a hook on the top and a clasp on the bottom. That would allow you to remove the
pipes for access instead of just having them on the hinge....

That water effect would be perfect !!  I will look into finding something like that.  Thanks.

Capt. Viscount:  Grill and vents are a perfect idea !!   Standby.

Mrs Whatsit:  I was always headed towards the curtain idea.  But you just gave me a better idea when you mentioned Velcro.  Velcro! I had forgotten about Velcro.  What a great idea !!
My current plan is to make some sort of grill or vent out of light material and Velcro them up to cover the space.  Perfect !  But I will not finish this until the room is finished.

Thank you all……

Most welcome sir, glad to be of help. Nice to see the paint coming along.

Next time I go to the hardware store I'll check to see what sizes the tubes come in.  I think they come larger.  I could just as well Velcro half or one third of a tube up there.  The carboard tubs are light.

My thoughts prezactly.. it's how a lot of paint on older seagoing boats actually looks..

I truly believe Velcro and WD-40 will rule the world some day.  Smiley  You should be able to use a staple gun to attach the velcro to most any of the materials you are using, too.

I thought about leaving the pipe wrinkled.  It is a good idea.  However, the wrinkle pattern ran at a 25 degree angle throughout the pipe.  I thought the wrinkle pattern would look too fake.

I know, I know I'm going overboard worrying about the little details.....

Today I went to the doctor for a medical procedure so I lost more than half the day.
But I managed to cover the pipe with texture.  I used some Spackle I had.

I finished painting all of the walls.

I have another engineering problem to solve.  I have been experimenting with different kinds of lighting for my room.  Because of the low ceiling and all of the details in the room I have found it difficult to provide good light for this room.  I will have a special work lamp on my desk.  The problem I have is lighting the rest of the room when I show the room to others.

I may have to go to a neon light.  The neon light does a great job of dispersing light throughout the room.  Do any of you have any idea, if I use a neon fixture, how I might decorate the fixture to fit into my steampunk submarine décor?  The fixture looks like this:               Thanks

You could re-house/cover it with a lattice, similar in design to the vent cover you used on the door. That would allow the light through but obsure the fact that is such a modern light. I'm not sure what you can get where you are but I was thinking something like this:

Dumb me.  I meant fluorescent !

Thank you Kathy, that might work !

Prof. Cogsworthy:  That's a good idea !  I could partially cover it up and let the light exit from behind or around the cover.  Genius......

Is there such a thing as going overboard with details?

With regards to the lighting problem, if I remember correctly the nautilus itself is described as merely having diffused panels in the ceiling. You could do something like that; which looks like diffused glass in a brass or wood housing, possibly with some sort of electrical apparatus attached to it (although maybe that is a little overboard!). That way you wouldn't get the same irregular light pattern as you would get with a vent or grill, although that may be more atmospheric!

You might also try rope lighting. I know it's not period correct. More anachronistic. But it does create a create soft magical glow of indirect lighting. And it can be tucked in and around things. Some brands can even be cut to length so it can be very customizable. And more pleasing than florescent.

Rope lighting placed inside PVC pipes with at least 1/3 of the pipe cut away
( mounted cut side up )

Or a single tube fluorescent fixture laid in the pipe ( might give more light.... )

A submarine would have caged light bulbs.  Thread somewhere about what Home Depot had that looked steampunk.  Included some "cages" for light bulbs that would fit nicely in your amazing design.

Here is one example from Home Depot.  Shown as a hanging light, but could be modified to be horizontal and then mounted on your beams.

Yeah, you guys are correct.  I was in the Navy for 5 years.  Caged lights everywhere.

I live 1/4 mile from Home Depo.  I'm making a run later today.  I'll see what they have.

Thanks...............

You do need a red one for when you are rigged for red during night operations.   Which reminds me: Periscope?

I was afraid to mention this earlier. Ha! Great Minds think alike! If you do it correctly, you could have it next to your work station and have it peep at whoever is at the door!
