I'd been away from the gym for about two weeks due to my pregnant fiancée feeling under the weather. So we finally made it back there last night. Not taking anything into consideration, I jumped right back in where I had left off. Ran 2 miles, worked my core and shoulders and went home to eat an oversized meal. Although I was extremely pleased to wake up to a completely empty stomach after gorging, the pleasure was cut short when I lifted my head.

My neck on the left side from the base of my skull through my shoulder and halfway down my back feels like someone beat me with the spiked end of a meat tenderizer. To make matters worse, I pulled into work this morning to see the BMW belonging to a coworker I was hoping not to see this morning and when I went to grab some eggs from the cafe I saw another coworker I didn't want to deal with today.

Did I mention I have to spend my lunch break taking a math test?

At least I have a nice warm vanilla latte from Starbucks. *takes sip* *falls out of chair*

Well. It WAS warm...

OK My Gahhhh for the day:

2 separate projects are so far proving frustrating!

I've got to rebuild the fence between my neighbour and myself, the landlord has delivered the necessary posts, clamps and panels. One of the clamps has gone into the ground on the skew, so has to be jacked out and reset, HMMMM no biggie I hear you say - but I don't have the necessary foot of re-bar in order to do that! The posts are a "snug" fit into the clamps and need fettling to fit - no biggie again just time wasting.

Second project is to get Igor's Occasional Computational Device working again! (its a shuttle box AMD maxton processor, 2GB ram, and a half terabyte sata hard drive) it was running karmic coala distro, I upgraded to 11.10 Ubuntu and now its just not playing ball, I've tried reinstalling software, boot sector repair discs and general tweaking, the main problem is that I'm not a geek enough to understand Ubuntu, I've had the bloody thing going in the past and can't see a way foreward!

I feel like taking the sledgehammer to Igor's device - but feel it will upset the poor fellow!

Oh dear, I hope you get well soon. I had a kidney infection once and that was bad enough!

My GAH today: Woke up this morning to find the fridge/freezer had packed up. Well actually it sort of exploded- the kitchen smells like an electrical fire and it tripped all the fuses in the house.
It's been a struggle to find a new model that would even fit in the space we have, most new fridge/freezers are too deep.

On the plus side, I've gotten to eat amusing food combinations all day whilst trying to eat everything that might go off =P

Cereal and blueberries for breakfast(to use up the milk), Samosas and smoothie for lunch, cheesecake and veggie sausages as a snack, who knows what I'll have for tea!

Also on a positive note- we left the broken one on the pavement to defrost- because there was no room in the house and Argos etc won't take them away unless they are dry. Within half an hour someone had run off with it (not literally- I think they had a van), saving us the expense of having taken away!

at some point this will move to the "did something productive thread" ...

Creating Epub from existing book text ... ouch

force learning xml from bad html 5 habits ... more ouch

phone keeps ringing with people wanting to chit-chat ... f*** head is turning red

finding errors pre-compiler ... go through all previous pages and fix

repeat previous step ... AGAIN and ... ?!

email from crazy relative ... head expplodes

So, for now, I'll have an obscenely strong brew, do yoga, eat a meat pie and abuse some kind of substance.  Tongue

Poundland closed in Rochdale
(For those unfamiliar with North West England http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rochdale
Rochdale is the biggest and most prosperous town close to where I spend most of my time working.

It was bad enough when McDonalds closed a couple of months ago(featured on the BBC News nationally) but when a decient sized town can't even support "Poundland" it's really in trouble.

People who use our private, reserved car parking spaces (including Disabled Bays) as if they were free first come first served public spaces.

This includes Council officials who are totally brazen about it if you complain to them (Oh I'm on business on the estate) and police parking their private cars in our spaces. They get very shirty.

We have had our basement car parks totally taken over by the Council in this way, when I asked for a space I was told the waiting list was years long.....because the damn council have no legal business using our spaces, but just muscle in. Then when after a few months they decide a space is available, I get flooded by notes to tell me I can have a space, and ooo look at us we're telling you as quick as we can......

Now, the Council are moving their offices away from this side of town, they don't want our parking any more, and maintenance on the garages has stopped.

Hey.

Needed my multimeter to test for a fault on a friends boiler, picked it up and the dodgy test lead fell apart. OK, so I'll just solder that back on..... plug in soldering iron, and .....nothing. It's dead. bugger! Tried the soldering gun, but that wasn't able to keep the heat on long enough to heat up the banana plug connector to allow the solder to flow. GGRRRRRRR!!!
So I reach for my trusty backup device - my mini blow torch. Guess what....yup that has broken also. Just a feeble weak blue flame, looks like the regulator valve has blocked / failed.  Huh Angry

To top it all off, the multimeter has developed a fault too.  Roll Eyes

GAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

In the end I was able to bodge it together, and diagnosed the central heating pump had failed. Called my plumber and he replaced the pump (I was more than capable, but I never do that sort of job on other people's stuff - it always comes back to haunt you...).

So now I now need to buy a new multimeter + test leads, a new soldering Iron and a new mini blow torch. *sigh* Sad

For me, today, it is the fact that every photography I'm on is ruined. It has been going on for a while, but now I have had enough.

The problem? 3 out of 5 new threads are about the Canon EOS 5D3. A camera that has not yet come out. No one has seen it in real life, or even seen a photo from it that did not come from Canon HQ. It is not even a new camera, but rather a weak attempt to fix all the issues of the 5D2.
And still we have to be carpet bombed with it and in the process loose all the topics that are actually interesting.

I'm seriously thinking of switching to Nikon over this. Just to get away from the fanboys. At least Nikon's fanboys seem to have more sense about the D800  Roll Eyes

When they start making something larger than 4/3, I might consider them.
Alternatively, I have been looking at Sony. Looks like they could be the big game changer.

I love Olympus and I love Sony.

Sony is making a great product.  I got (and still get despite having an Olympus DSLR) a lot of use out of my Cybershot.  If they make their other cameras like that, then I'd say go for it.

Pavement etiquette..or lack of it. I'm so sick and tired of people who walk two or three or even four abreast down the street and make no effort whatsoever to make space fpr people coming the other way. This morning  there were three tracksuit wearing, fag smoking, pram pushing, chavettes* coming down the road. I'm coming the other way. As we got closer I realised that I would either have to hug the wall like a limpet  and hope the buggy nearest didn't run over my feet or step off the pavement into  heavy traffic so these three selfish fat cows can hog the entire pavement!
If the pavement is very narrow and I'm walking with the Countess and someone is coming the other way I automatically fall into single file until we pass the other person. When I'm walking down a busy street with lots of pedestrians and I have a bag over my shoulder, as I weave my way through the crowd (I'm quite a fast walker) I turn my body side on and tuck my bag out the way so it doesn't bang into people. And in return?.. I'm battered by every shoulder bag and rucksack on the bloody street!!
GAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!!

*I realise these are precisely the sort of people from whom I shouldn't expect manners but it's not always chav types who behave like this..it just so happens that this morning it was.

I have nothing bad to say about Olympus. And I even like the 4/3 format for it's native compatibility with old MF lenses. Lots of great glass to be found in that category.
But 4/3 is simply to small for my general needs. It is a simple matter of the physical limitations of the smaller sensor.

I very much like Sony. The Cybershot range are currently my choice for compact cameras. But the interesting thing is their DSLR's. They try new things instead of just doing what everyone else is doing.
My preference for Canon is based on ergonomics and familiarity. From a technical point of view, there is little to separate them from Nikon. And if Sony does what I think they will with their next model, I think they will be taking massive market shares from both.

The non-profit I work for had a major fundraiser last night; a banquet and silent auction. The night wasn't a total loss, and I got to rock some sweet antique cufflinks with my suit, but the silent auction was a complete failure. Several services up for auction had a value of $500 or more, and sold less than a tenth of that value, and other items of similar value generated almost no interest whatsoever. We are really tight on money at the moment, and this was supposed to be a huge success, so I'm more than a bit frustrated today. Aside from the lack of interest by those in attendance, the ball was also dropped big time by people in the office. A $500 package of services from a law firm was accidentally marked with a $125 value, and the winning bid was $25. Ouch.

I got ill yesterday evening and now missed a day of internship )=    slept for about 12 hours, as well, though I suppose that`s a good thing. The sad part is that because I`ve apparantly gotten so used to only sleeping about 5 hours, and because I went to sleep at 9 pm yesterday, I ended up awake at 2.30 for at least an hour.

So Tuesday I received an automated phone call that the city water where I live was not safe to drink and had to be boiled.  Wednesday we received another notice that got cut off by the answering machine.  After calling City Hall I was told that the water isn't even safe to wash your hands with, and that we need to use bleach when we wash dishes.  Hmmm.  Maybe this is the source of the extremely painful UTI I've been fighting for two weeks that the doctors are baffled as to where it came from or how I caught it, in spite of the fact that I have personally spoken to about 10 people in the last few days that have had the same problem over the past months.

Fast forward to this morning.  City Council calls an emergency meeting to meet with the contractor that is managing the water system, and we're told that the state has been investigating our water quality for "several months" because the contractor has not been doing the proper testing.

REALLY?!?!

Several freaking MONTHS?

Our water comes from a river and there are 8 sewer plants upstream from us that ALL dump directly into the river, and our "cost saving" outsourced contractor isn't monitoring our water quality correctly?Huh

I've always called them goat killers. I learned the term from my father and he got it from a work mate. It's not widely used and I've no idea where it originates. Maybe my father's workmate made it up.

That's completely appalling. I suggest bottled water for everything (even the dishes, because I'm sure eating off traces of bleach is unhealthy) at least until your UTI is cleared up. Keep all the reciepts for the water and ask the water supplier to refund you, after all you have been paying them for drinking water!

My GAH today is probably a huge over-reaction.

Just because someone has a 9 to 5 job does not mean they understand the pressure/workload of post-graduate study. With a normal job, you have working hours and days off. I feel guilty any minute I spend doing something other than research, because I know there are not enough hours in the day to get everything done. Telling me I should just chill out more doesn't help- I really can't if I want to prove I have 'doctoral potential' in 2 weeks time at my review panel.

Just because you got up and went to work today, it doesn't give you the right to be 'too tired' to see me, or ever stay at mine anymore. The bus ride to work is SHORTER from my house. Just admit it, you don't like staying here because my computer doesn't have WoW and I don't have a flat-screen TV.

Just because my hours/work location are flexible doesn't mean I am happy to constantly re-organise my life at short/no notice at all. I was looking forward to seeing you. Wading through a stack of textbooks is easier if you have something other than more textbbooks at the other end of it.

Just because I love you doesn't mean I can be treated as an after thought- It hurts when you won't spend quality time with me but will decide at the drop of a hat to travel half way across the country with friends.

Sorry for the rant, but I really don't understand my relationship the last couple of weeks. I supported him as best as I could through the boredom and disillusionment of unemployment for over a year. Now he has a job again he's drifting so far away from me and I don't know why.... Maybe I'm actually just a really dull person. Maybe I don't fit with his life plan anymore.

Maybe he`s just an idiot, to put it nicely.

My own gah is the fact I`ll (probably) be graduating in a few months` time, and I don`t have the money to continue studying, don`t have the money to go travelling, and I`m kind of afraid that once I start work (which will be hard enough to find in the first place, in the current economic climate and with my study of choice) I`ll be stuck in it and forget about studying or not be able to get back into that rhythm if I ever do manage to get myself out of that working life and back into college.
