Thank you for popping in, Jeff. It's good to have clarification. Sorry about the misunderstanding regarding permits. You were the person I was referring to when I said: "...had to call in the guy that ran it last year to take the reigns."
It did run smoother after you showed up.

I'm looking forward to this year. If all goes well, and I see it going well, I am liking the idea of making this an annual jaunt. I was there for the first one, so being there for the subsequent ones and making it tradition sounds like fun to me. Smiley

Hello, folks!  Might I pipe in with an official reply?

One thing that isn't generally known is that the management for The Steampunk World's Fair changed for the second event - I had taken the year off to get married!

We changed over from last year's management some months back, and have been busy trying to get everything ready.

While I can't speak for last year's management, one of the primary problems they had is that the Crowne Plaza didn't get any of the proper permits, which was very much in violation of its written agreements.  (The World's Fair DID have the proper permits - I have a copy of the permit right here in my desk.)  This led to a very difficult situation indeed.

Listen, let me be candid with you: I'm not going to say, "If you didn't like last year, you'll love this year".  I mean, all you have is my word that things are more solid for this year (we're back to the original hotels!) - with the hotels being on top of permits, for example.  And let's face it - I'm not exactly unbiased. Smiley

But we're working very, very hard to make this year's World's Fair pretty fantastic, and I do hope you give it a look.

Oh, and psn1der, about the "Performance" and "Pleasure" links currently having the same content - I fear that's the fault of our being busy in the selection process. Smiley  So far, most of what we have on the site counts as both a performance and a pleasure.  When we put up info on things that aren't performances - like, say, the absinthe tastings, or more details on the "Hope It Rains" segment, that'll be under "Pleasures", but not performances.

Got questions, comments, thoughts?  I'd be more than honored if you'd throw them my way. Smiley
This really helps.  Thank you very much for the information.

@Lord Wraste - egads, I totally missed that part.  Oh.  I was, indeed, that guy.  I don't blame last year's organizers for that whole fire code problem - the Somerset Assistant Chief of Police told me, personally, that the hotel hadn't gotten proper permits--and that this wasn't the first time.  I also know that the really enthusiastic person that they'd worked with at the hotel was so excited by World's Fair... that shortly after the contract was signed, she decided to follow her dreams and start her own company - leaving the Crowne Plaza altogether!

@psn1der - Well, you've also given me food for thought - I should start getting other non-performers up quickly, so that the "Pleasures" section is a bit more varied.

And thanks to you both for writing back so quickly. Smiley

It's not exactly extraordinary news, but just for the record, we have put up the first "Pleasure" that isn't a performance - the Absinthe Tasting.  You could find it over at http://steampunkworldsfair.com/?p=5272, were you so inclined. Smiley

Little over a month away!!

ZO! For those of us headed south after the fun and festivities, Ryu and I are putting together a little side jaunt.

We found a great little place in Philly called The Franklin Fountain.
It's fantastic! The time we went we shared a massive and scrumptious sundae called, appropriately, the Franklin Mint. Smiley

Any one who'd like to join us is welcome!

The only issue being we will most likely leave at an early enough hour from the event to make it there around noon/one o'clock, so you hard partiers may miss out.

In my own thoroughly unbiased opinion, you'll love The Steampunk World's Fair.  Between the absinthe tasting, the circus, the international performers, and the vast crowd of ridiculously friendly people, it's a very good time.

And I am, as I said, totally unbiased. Wink

Just wanted to chime in and say I'll be there this year as well, 3rd year in a row!  The first year was spectacular, last year had it's problems, but was still really fun!  Now, that it's returning to the original hotel, I have High Hopes for this year!  And seriously guys, how can you not go?  It's got The Clockwork Dolls, A European Buffet and High Tea, White Elephant Burlesque Society, VOLTAIRE!and just so much more!  Head on over to Steampunk Worlds Fair now to check out more!

Don't forget Emperor Norton's Stationary Marching Band! They've been one of my favorite parts the past two years.

Mutiny At the Steampunk World's Fair - The A.S.S. Titilus Takes the Field!

Now With Even Less Supervision!

What's that? The Titilus Crew have 'Slipped their leashes, and the Captain's nowhere to be seen! Something about a mutiny fills the air as Bartholomew J. Warbisham, Cydney Savia, Z0RM and the others have gone-off-the chain with foam and 'mange, rampaging through the halls and generally running amok. Meantime, this will not stop them in the 'slightest from practicing the Rules of Swagger up and down the entire event, as they fill out and usurp as much of the convention programming as one could possibly conceive!

Rumor has it they will be hunting for signs of their hated arch nemesis, the Gypsy Pirate Rohan Balraj and his "Dogs of War", whatever or whomever that means! But can they succeed without their Captain?

Tune in as Steam-Funk Studios & The Crew of the A.S.S. Titilus make an Announcement about the Steampunk World's Fair 2012's attractions, with an unexpected Interruption:

Was reading some "Steampunk in the News" online and found this link.

Pictures from SPWF 2012

Link goes to a Flickr album for Jim Kiernan.  You might recognize some of the BG set from Washington, DC, amongst others.  Smiley

I had a great time. MC'd the costume extravaganza, hosted the weapons panel, had a few lessons with Prof. Donnelly and participated in the single stick tourney. Loads of fun.

Regrettably, I didn't make it to SWF this year, but I found this really nice set of photos on Flickr that hasn't been posted here yet. Lots of great costumes and people have a grand old time. Smiley

EDITED TO ADD: Oh dear, um - I did not notice prior to posting, but it seems that pages 3 and 4 of above-linked album are NSFW. Apologies!
