Created this barn mailbox for my parents for xmas. (don't tell them)  They get lots of stuff in the mail and needed a very big mailbox and wanted it to look like an old barn.  The box is entirely out of steel with a little bit of brass and lexan. Most of the steel is 1/8" thick with some parts thicker and others thinner. It is 18 inches tall, 15 inches wide and 24 inches deep.  The flag is the door on the side.  Opened it reveals the red to let the postal carrier know there is mail to take.  Because the box is so big a normal door was not practical so I came up this this design that allows the door to drop down.  It is counterbalance so it moves very easily.  The box will be mounted on a 6x6 post that already exists.

Thanks. It ended up taking way more time then I ever expected.  The colors are even better in person.

Very nicely done. Is it welded or soldered together? Hope you don't have anyone in your area who does mischief with baseball bats. Lost a mailbox to the "batters" years ago , had to get mail in town after that.

I was thinking the same thing... My grandparents place down in Fla. had that problem..... Built them a mailboxt out of an old diving tank when done it looked like a normal mail box..... it was mounted on a steel pipe... welded...... one time we found part of a bat.... and screech marks after it........ I think the batter may have broken something like a wrist....... Armored mailbox 1 ... batter 0..... the next batch of hoodlums liked to run over trash cans.... we set two shiney 32 gal. cans in front of an empty lot with broken up cement block and filled with sand..... that night someone took them out .... left a trail of motor oil for some distance...... never had another problem......

As always Maets great work with fine attention to detail.

Many thanks.  The box is welded and fairly strong.  Most of the mailboxes (169 to date) I make are 1/4 high strength steel and just about indestructable.  This one will be a little more vunerable as it is primarily 1/8" steel.

All I have to say is that Ma and pa don't have to carry it out to get the mail.........
I would say that should last many life times....

Should have glued some gears on it....

Beautiful work, really.  Nicely done, and a very nice design.

Cheers!

It's real.
Get's my vote of coolness.

Seems like the norm to fake stuff and sadly the fake stuff gets more attention.

Thanks!

I installed it last week and got some pictures.  I will post them soon.  Happy to report that mail is being delivered and a major rain showed no signs of a leak.

Here are the pictures of the barn mailbox on its post.  Even threw in one with a gear, just for those who insist it is not steampunk without a gear or two.

Visited my parents last week.  The mailbox I made for them was showing some rust so decided to go with paint.  Here it is.  Some hand trim works needs to be done.  I'll leave that up to dad.
