I finished my desk!

Huzzah!

Alas, it didn't turn out quite as Dieselish as I'd hoped, but it's a hell of a lot nicer than what was there before! and only £30!

In person the reclaimed oak and stainless steel compliment each other well, better than they do in the picture!

To me a desk/lab/workbench is only workable when it is cluttered with spare, bits ´n bobs, tools.....

Inflatable Friend, is it neat because it's new, or because you yourself are neat!?

Both, kind of! It's already had the addition of a keyboard and a mouse plus a TV-on-a-box.

To me a desk/lab/workbench is only workable when it is cluttered with spare, bits ´n bobs, tools.....

I sort of work in phases - It'll start of clean and slowly gather clutter for a week or so while I work then I'll have a day of desk rage where everything gets cleaned off!

The trouble is I can't work properly with a small or cluttered desk, getting my head down for a proper work sesh will involve a sketchbook, a pile of A4 paper, one or two books (or more) and maybe a reference model or two. If I can't have that lot spread out around me then I have a grumpy time working!

Early this year the rain gauge on my weather station stopped sending data. The torrential downpours of the last few days appear to have kick-started it back to life! Hurrah!

40.9mm of rain in the last 24 hours...

I'm almost finished building my new case for the Raspberry Pi board.  Smiley  I've been working at it solidly for that last 24hrs, and it's taking shape nicely.  Took some hunting to find a small enough fan for the case (the Pi does get quite warm), and then quite a headache trying to cram everything inside - connectors that hang off the board on ALL SIDES does not make for an easy case build that ISN'T a square box...

Quite pleased with the overall look, and it's NOTHING like all the other case builds I've seen. I have named it the "Raspberry Pi Tin".  Grin

Now all I have to do is get a number of connector adapters to run the onboard headers to the outside of the case. Biggest Issue I have is finding 4 very long but thin screws to hold the thing together... That last one might be tricky.

Pics when finished. It's not steampunk however - I went with the Raspberry Pi colour theme.  Wink

Today I got the layout proofs for our new LARP projects first batch of posters. And they look really good.
Now we just need to finish casting the models, create, wardrobe and get the photos done before sending it back to the printers.

This is going to be pretty damn epic  Grin

In Paris for a construction history conference and spotted this barometer shop round the corner from where we are staying in the Montmartre:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/8946321@N07/7488029528/#

It is a gilding workshop and barometer menders and the barometers are awesome and a jawcracking price, so none in my luggage this time.

It's getting tempting!

So far I have worked out an alternative route to hold everything together with shorter screws. The case was designed to be held together with four internal screws with internal guides. The case is in 4 parts and now held thus: the base simply clicks into place to hide the screws, the bottom section is secured to the top section by two of the shorter screws, and the top of the case is held internally by the other set of screws.  This does work, although not as strongly (the case flexes a little) and makes things harder to align properly.

However one of the screws I found is not quite wide enough to bite into the plastic screw guide to get a fixing, and promptly pulled out and made the hole even wider. Now I can't find any other screw that will fit the hole, with a small enough head to allow the head to sit recessed in the guide...  Roll Eyes

AS always - I need a good long screw!.....  Cheesy

GOD YES.  I replaced many, MANY screws on various things 'round my house with 'em!

---------

Being back on here-even if it's only for tonight, makes me happy.

This place...  I cannot begin to tell you what it means to me.  Several of the people I used to interact with regular on here I interact with on Facebook, but I tell you-this SITE, this FORUM...

Guys, if you had ANY CLUE all that you've pulled me through...

Words cannot express...

That's all for this post, mates...  Can't think straight through tears and booze...

Xenos, the booze IS NOT going to help the heart thing you have going at the moment! What we don't need is another entry on the "In Memoriam" page - um, do we have an "In Memoriam" page?

Otherwise, happy to see you back - make it a habit, hey!

Oh, this I know.  Neither is the smoking.  Or the bacon.  Or the steak.

But you know what?  IF I die, I'm going to die doing what I love!

But nah, really, I'm pretty ok-it just feels like someone's stabbing me in the chest with a really sharp, really thin knife.  It only happens 2-3 times a day-nothing major.  I've gotten fairly nearly used to it!

And aye, I'm trying to get back regular!  This makes more'n a dozen posts I've made today!  That's the most since early March!

The forum allows me to post things I would never post on Facebook (because my family is watching me...  I feel like I'm in that Rockwell song).

It is quite good to be back-and, even if I practically live in off-topic, if I can get on here once a week, I'll be a much happier person, I'm sure.

I'm going to SHOOT for once a month.  IF I can make more than that-WONDERFUL!  IF not....

Have you thought of dowels?  Or lengths of copper/brass/aluminium rod?  Make them a tight press fit by lining out the holes and they should work just as well as screws.

Thanks all for the warm welcomes!

Now, on to what's made me happy today!

I quite literally only had to work for an hour and ten minutes!  Aye, it was an hour trip total, so I was gone for just over two-but the point is, I'm home now, and it's a day of relaxing I'm looking forward to!
