My day: went to Spitalfields Market together with charming forum member Outflyer Calliope for a vintage market / costume sale. I found a lovely pink Victorian dress for myself, another Victorian dress for a friend of mine who had to stay at home (both were a steal I might add).
Plus another dress, a red one, 40ies style, which looks actually quite va-va-voom with me in it!  Grin
And to top it all (quite literally!), I found a bowler hat in my size, by Christie's London, for 10 £.

That was enough happies for an entire week today! Lovely, fun company, great clothes, delicious food, so much fun!  Grin

Quick trip to Brighton resulted in a new Suitcase and a Top hat, which fits better than the one I currently have, when I returned my new boots were waiting for me on the doorstep....  Grin

I've found two places that can count as home to me. Slab city down in southern California where anything goes, and the Outback down under. I already I plan on living in the outback for several years learning from the bushmen. Yay Better start planning. Smiley

Time Team is back on air  Lips sealed  Angry  Sad

(I don't have anything in particular against it, except a. if it ain't Roman, they ain't interested and b. my Father watches it incessantly on More4, even though they're just the same tired old ten or so episodes repeated ad nausea).

Tonight, they're digging in a little town called Dunwich  Cheesy

Frankly I'm surprised there's anything Roman left for them to destroy excavate.  The most interesting episodes I've ever seen have been their excavations of Matthew Boulton's Birmingham Soho factory, Arthur Liberty's silk printworks in South London, the world's first 'railway' (technically, plateway or tramway) viaduct in South Wales (now buried under about 50' of spoil) and the two or three aircraft they've done.

Today's things that have made me happy are preparing to book for the Asylum, and deciding I should probably come back to this very forum that got neglected due to business offline.

Regarding Time Team, I stopped watching after my Archaeology tutor told us a lot of it was faked- they were doing a dig in Norwich (I think that one was one of the few that wasn't Roman) and were trying to find the specific location of something.  They'd just started digging when my tutor found records showing what they wanted somewhere else, and he was told to leave it until the Sunday because they couldn't be bothered to relocate.  So naturally, the program has them finding a couple of bits but not what they wanted, then in the last minute my tutor comes running on saying he found where they went wrong and everyone says 'oh well, if only we knew sooner'...
Plus I've heard stories of Tony Robinson being an utter *bleep* but that could just be hearsay.

I don't know if it's "couldn't be bothered to relocate"... it would have taken a lot of effort to move, they'd have needed different permissions to dig somewhere else and they still have a time limit... by the time it was all sorted they'd probably have done not much better...

The time limit annoys me and the way they pretend they found out things so fast- like in an episode I saw recently (it was an old one though) they discovered a skeleton, and they acted like the found out whether it was male or female and her age to within 5 years (they said late 30's) when they'd only uncovered a few bones!

I know a little bit about human bone (although I'm no expert- my uni dropped the course before I got to take it =[) and I know that without both the pelvis and skull uncovered they would have been speculating the sex at best, and that it's notoriously difficult to age adults accurately (after the fusion of all epiphyses in the early 20's) The jaw bone was missing and tooth wear is the best indication in adults- at least in prehistory. Grr

Finding a copy of Jules Verne Classic Science Fiction on my bookshelf, hiding behind something else. It is a reproduction of three classic JV stories - 'From the Earth to the Moon', 'Round the Moon' & '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea', with original illustrations, & two articles. 'the World of Jules Verne' & 'Verne & Films' by Alan Russell.

Happy Birthday!

I had a great evening last night, and I'm happy because of it. A good game, a good party for the game, and a decent nights sleep on top of it all.

How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know, is my question to you."

The game last night.  My team lost, aye, but only just.  Ya never really make a Hail Mary-would have been nice if they did.

Hell, for that matter, it would have been nice if they had actually SHOWED up to the game, rather than just kinda suck the whole time.

The Giants played a GREAT game, I tell ya.

Best part?

I called the entire game-victors, coin toss, and spread.

Many happy returns, Mercury Wells!  I too know the absolute joy that model railway goodness on birthdays brings!

My other happy for the day lies in that I've just completed the application for what I would deem a 'dream job'.  Working for the Victorian Society advising on the conservation of 19th Century buildings (focussing particularly on churches, but working on any Victorian building would suit me right down to the ground).

I just posted in the GAH thread about my horrendous experience with an almost roommate and who once was a good friend.  Which I know I am partially to blame for.  I should have been more assertive, and less of a procrastinator.  But we live and learn.  The thing that makes me happy is that just before the conclusion of that madness  my girlfriend's roommate announced to me that she was growing rather attached to my friend's cat.  Who we've been watching for the past month, since he showed up with it and dumped it on us.  Which is great because as circumstances would have it, she'll be our cat for the foreseeable future.  Hooray.

Let me just add that it is not that I am not a cat person.  But this cat is very much simple, I'd even say ding-bat, and also a spoiled little brat.
