Car insurance can get quite silly.
My eldest passed her test last year and it was cheaper to buy her a car for learning than to add her name to either SWMBO's or my car policies.
The insurance for her when she passed was scary - and well over the value of the car even for "third party fire and theft".
The crazy part (and what made me very happy at the time) was a certain company offering a "family discount policy" where the premium for all three cars in the family worked out as the same as insuring the eldest's car by itself with a different company; ie by taking up this policy SWMBO's car and mine are effectivley insured for free and that even included business use for me!
(No - I'm not advertising, I'm not going to tell you which company it was)

Been having a bad bout of flashbacks lately, so I am not sleeping well. Not wanting to have a total waste of a night I did some more work on my new steampunk project....I am in love. I have been taking WIP photos even though the project is mostly a secret for now.

Car insurance is horribly expensive! However, I found out the girl who smashed into my car back in November was UNINSURED!
this means she'll get 8 points, her license taken off her and a £5000 fine, AND my car will get fixed.

My parents are into accessory/jewelry making nowadays, doing a second course already in it. I talked to my dad yesterday, and out of the blue he asks me "hey, do you want me to put rhinestones in this thing I'm making for you?". Turns out, he's making a steampunk brooch for me. He actually picked up an old clock at an antique market and took it apart, and is now making this brooch for me with the gears from the clock. He actually said "Yep, steampunk! Right?". I'm so proud.
My dad is totally awesome.

I appear to have been promoted to Admiral. This makes me quite happy.
Also I learned last night that plans to start a local indoor model flying club are back on track....and the hall although on the small side, is only £5 an hour to hire.

One of the (few) upsides about where I live is that it is absolutely covered with old coal mines. Now it follows that where there are coal mines there must therefore be coal, in abundance, on the surface- because of the spoil heaps. So guess who managed tonight to get a fairly large lump of the stuff, completely for free, to fill the bunkers of his 4mm scale locos?

 This, my new Apache helicopter, makes me happy. It is an amazing little (11 inch long) radio controlled model that flies well and is extremely strong. And maybe has a Steampunk look about it? I may remove the rather garish decoration, including the Engrish 'Helicoper' signs on the tail.... Looking forward to giving it a proper test fly when our new indoor flying club opens for business in a week's time. But apart from it's amazing specification for the money I like the fact that the helicopter is completely dismantleable with screwdrivers, and every part is available. This is not a throwaway toy. |

Sweet- my brother has the miniature Chinook model (around 8'' long). Spent all of Christmas morning trying to get it off the ground upright, and then trying to avoid the knick knacks, bric-a-brac and tat that passes for ornaments in the sitting room... |

Congratz! I'm happy for the two of you! I'm happy because I got to spend the afternoon with my father and two of my three brothers hiking through the woods and Geocaching. It was a nice day here for a change (not raining or snowing for once) and we had a great time. |

Just finished filling my new (well, really old but recently reused...) fishtank in my study. Fingers are now tightly crossed that my judgement on the strength of the table supporting it are correct, and that my "fix" to the problem of the tank being slightly longer than said table, is actually a good idea. Yeah, happy but still a little nervous...  On the plus side, I lucked out with a purchase of some cheap LED lights. They are 24 LED lights with a built in magnet and hook, pretty much a cheap work light / camping light. However they are *PERFECT* for the fishtank lighting! The magnet even allows them to be simply stuck in place on the steel tank lid. I also have another pair of LED lights of larger but similar design, only these have a mode with a ring of 10 unfocused / widebeam LEDs or a tight 3 LED spot light, which allready perform well at lighting the tank brightly and evenly. I will be modifying them all to run from an efficient 'wall-wart' switchmode power supply instead of batteries. Whole lot cost me less than £25 (8 of them plus the 2 slightly more expensive 10 LED ones) and will last for a VERY long time (should be good for around 15 to 20 years! - based on 8 hours per day use / 50,000Hrs life expectancy...). MUCH cheaper than a store bought item!  Very happy with that purchase. SS |

I started work on the recipes for my homemade "Sodie-Pops" today. I've got an Apple Soda, a Sarsaparilla, and a Root Beer (none are actually bottled-that'll be by next weekend)! I also plan to have a Cherry, Pineapple, and possibly a Peach, Lemon, and Lime.
IF I can find a good Cola recipe, I *may* make a cola. But EVERYONE makes cola...
I also need a good name. So far, drawing from one of my great great great uncle's surnames: "Bragg's Best Bubbly." and a decent tagline (although it's not been around NEARLY that long, it still SOUNDS nice!) is "A Family Tradition Since Prohibition!"
