I managed to find for sale a piece of Bloodwood dowel, three feet by 3/4"- perfect for my walking stick. The surprising part is that I could actually afford it.

Now I just need a handle shaped like a crow. I found a couple ravens, but both are on finished canes and a bit pricier than I'd like to go. Still options if I can't find something better, though.

I was just musing on the creation of a raven topped cane for myself (there seems to be a lot of the family on this Forum, cousin Mistress Magpie is around here somewhere). I was thinking of carving a simple raven head myself.

Happy thing today: Not at my hellish job and getting a chance to show off my art today! Huzzah!

I have been on to freecycle and a couple of people have offered me defunct timepieces that I can cannibalise for my new hat.

I've had FIVE (5!!!) calls from recruiters today. I have one offer for a temp job, one for a management job (quite challenging, well-paid and in a place where I don't really want to live) and one job I'd really, really want because it sounds fun and interesting. Though I'd have to relocate for that one.  Roll Eyes

My CV is being forwarded to all these companies... wish me good luck!  Smiley

Good luck!

I feel like such a strange person, everyone around me is looking for a job, and I can't wait to get out of mine! Though, to be fair, I am going to be going back to school, but it still seems a bit strange to me.

The federal government has paid off it's debt to me. Still waiting to hear from the State.

Looks like I can finally get my laptop fixed. Assuming it's even fixable; from what I've read, it looks like the BIOS chip is shot. I looked for Asus g2-k laptops today in case I needed to replace it, and didn't find any for sale, not even used ones. I did find tons of parts though, and that has me a bit worried.

But either getting it fixed or knowing for certain I'll need to replace it is a good thing. Better than having it sitting in my closet, without a clue what to do with it.

Discovering a new (to me) acronym at work: STEAM = Science Technology Engineering Architecture Mathematics.

This was revealed to me as part of a call for papers for a conference called "Drawing in STEAM". Gotta love that doncha?

I really like that!! And ... it fits my vocation as well.  May I use that?

My happy bits:
We've finished ashing and mulching the garden!  A whole lotta work (it's around 1000 square feet).  Peas are planted ... taters will get planted perhaps this weekend.   Fruit trees and berry bushes are pruned.  Lilacs are pruned.  Mint gardens are cut back and mulched.  Lavenders survived yet another winter.   Once all gets to growing, we ought to have an easy 6 to 8 months of canned goodies.  Perhaps this year I'll invent a clockwork watering machine (instead of infinitely planning it)
Oh ... and lots of fresh makings for some fine teas as well.

I'd also like to extend my congratulations to all who have found gainful employment!!  This is really great news and puts the 'ol smile on the face  Cheesy

Mr. Crow:  the cure for aging computers (not worth the space they take up) can be summed up as follows ... point 3-5-7 (one will do the trick!).  Whatever is left will make interesting wall art.

Received a parcel yesterday containing spares.
So finally I was able to restore an olr Märklin O-gauge Baggage car to original condition.
When I received it years ago it had wrong bogies and was missing couplings, roof and some smaller bits&pieces.
So I spent most of the evening running it round my layout in different trains. Happy and relaxing evening.

Getting back on here, even if it's just for a few.  See my post in the GAAAAAAAAAH thread for more info on my absence (and even IT'S not very detailed).

I cannot say I'll be as regular as I once was, my life duties have taken my free time very nearly away from me-but, I'm making a bit of money, and hope to soon have a cushion of disposable income on a bi-weekly basis.

Outside that, what makes me happy today is finally having enough free time to get my yardwork done!  The house is clean, the yard is done, and I've a kayak to buy this June!  EXCITED!

Also, as those of you who spend any amount of time with me on Facebook know, this year is the YEAR OF MANLY!!  OUTDOORS!!  GRILLING!!  Etc, etc, etc.

So, all in all, despite my (rather extended) absence, and how much life has sucked this year, it's looking up-if for no other reason than *I* am looking up!

I have been working with parrots....never have been around parrots in my life until now.  They make me happy because these birds always say "Hello!" and "Good bye."   Grin  There is one at the store that had been wild captured 25 years ago.  He is a bit grumpy and has never done well with humans and apparently I have become his friend according to the staff who have been around him for years.  It is a cool feeling.

Chico.  Truthfully I am starting to realize that people don't give Parrots enough credit as far as their intelligence goes.  A lot is just mimicking, but sometimes, especially with greetings they do know the proper placement.  Again it is most likely just imitation, but it's a certain imitation that requires more observation.  (similar to how we learn as children when to say hello and when to say good bye)

Most birds are smarter than people realize. Parrots have been taught not only to talk, but to count and identify objects and colors. Crows have been observed making tools, using traffic patterns to crack nuts, and figuring out vending machines. Mockingbirds can distinguish between individual humans, and will remember which ones are threats and which are harmless.

Ironically, the "wise old owl" is probably one of the least intelligent birds- those huge eyes don't leave all that much space for the brain.

Apparently prairie dwellers have an enmity with magpies and my uncle told me of a friend who had a magpie trap which is a baited cage of wire mesh with a cone shaped opening from one edge into the middle.  The bird goes in the cone then goes to the edge to get out but there is no edge opening and he doesn't think to go to the middle were the cone is open.
This guy caught a magpie and before he could go get his gun (don't get me started) a second bird arrived.  2 for 1 he thinks.  Then he watched as bird 2 "talks" to bird 1 and coaxes it over to the edge where the cone starts.  Bird 2 then hops up on top of the cage, still talking and slowly follows the cone to the middle, still on top where he's free and followed by bird 1.  When they reach the middle bird 1 finds the opening and walks out and both birds fly off.
Ha!

Animal stories make me happy.

That's a D11 'Improved Director'; same basic design with a few improvements (namely, a more commodious cab).  One of them is preserved, in full Great Central lined green livery, at Barrow Hill Roundhouse.   Oh, and I'm getting a model of that one (again in 4mm scale) for Christmas... roll on December!
