I had my first day at the internship today =D     I had nothing to do yet, besides read some papers they gave me, but at least my colleagues are pretty awesome so far.

Once actual work starts coming in, this might be a really fun internship ^^

I got the chance to throw an outfit together and take some pictures, which will be up soon. I think they turned out rather well, especially for the limited time I spent getting it all together. Grin

How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know, is my question to you."

Has Valentine's Day OFF for the first time since my wife and I have been my wife and I.  I fully plan to make the most of it by spending the entire day with my wife.

Despite the massive amount of in-law related GAH! the other day, there were enough small things to at least make the day not a total loss. The wife took me to the hibachi grill we went to on our first date, though it took a lot of effort to get her folks to watch the kids, I got several compliments on my old stetson I bashed into a 'The Shadow' type extra wide brim fedora, and I got some stick on tread which has made wearing my new boots in the snow and ice not nearly as suicidal.

Decided to walk the long way home from my boyfriends.

Walked along the canal and spotted some eco-pirates; their narrowboat had a wind turbine with the jolly roger flying from it!

Also happened to have my camera on me when I passed the local churchyard and finally had time to record the inscriptions on all the headstones. They have turned the churchyard into a 'village square' and laid almost all the stones flat- even in the middle of the pathways! This has caused terrible damage to some inscriptions and decoration especially those which had lead lettering (feet, pushchairs and skateboards have pulled many of the letters off) so I'll be playing join the dots to work out the inscriptions. I'm going to spend this afternoon producing a record sheet for each monument- and give a copy to the church warden- i hope he/she will thank me when the inscriptions are unreadable in a few months/years. It makes me mad that our heritage and our dead can be disrespected in this way but I'm glad I can do something however small to ensure these people are remembered.

Reading the previous post has helped start the day.  What a lovely idea.  I too am saddened by the loss of culture that seems to be befalling all of our heritage.  I am glad to help in any effort that is in preserving our culture.  I am also glad today to be finally setting up my leatherworking area in the house and a bit of a work area for other projects as well.  I'll soon be building a chicken coop and a garden for my lady.  After which I get to start working on cabinets for my "summer kitchen".  I'll mostly be working with leftover wood from town, mainly old pallets from deliveries to the True Value.

My father is an amateur genealogist, and I majored in history in college. We both thank you sincerely and from the depths of our hearts. The loss of that kind of information is horrible; especially since genealogical research is often difficult enough already.

I'm an archaeologist who specialises in post-medieval funerary practices; especially Victorian cemeteries. I wish I could record every memorial in every cemetery in the world but I can't. Honestly though its not hard at all- anyone with a camera can help. I urge you all to record any memorials you see under threat. It's actually a lot of fun to puzzle out the inscriptions =]

We have a cemetery in my hometown that dates back to the 1850s, and most of the gravestones are unreadable. There is a local historian who is trying to document as many as possible though, and the county historical society is very active in preserving all that it can.

Very glad to hear it- my I suggest that they photograph the stones in different lighting conditions- especially low angle light and just after rain in order to bring out hidden detail. Taking rubbings can also help with reading very faint inscriptions.

Great advice about photographs. I'll pass that on. I believe they have done rubbings already. The local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy has been active in this area since the 1920s, and they do a lot of historical conservation.

I've actually a graveyard near my house that dates back...  oh, late 1700s?  This information is going to be passed right along to the Historic Society that keeps the town it's in going!

For the interested parties, the town is Old Salem, the graveyard is God's Acre.

OLD Salem (in NC), not Salem, Mass.  Which, by the way, apparently NO ONE was burned alive-they were actually hanged or crushed.

At least, that's what I was told by a Wiccan girl.  Dunno the truth behind it.

In the crucible (in case anyone doesn't know that's Arhtur Miller's play about the witch trials) they all get hung or crushed under quirn stones so that might be true.

Wow. I've actually heard of God's Acre, I read an article last year that mentioned it (if I find it again i'll send you a link) it sounds like a really fascinating place; I'd love to be able to visit!

The amount of cemetery love in this thread is also makes me very happy =] Most people think I'm kind of crazy for being so passionate about death related heritage =P It's probably because the little goth girl who likes tombs is such a cliche!

Reading this very nearly physically hurt. But then, I live somewhere where you're lucky to get any history past two hundred years...

I'm happy because my husband has decided to try and lose some weight. He's quit drinking, eating healthier, and is going to start exercising soon. The only trick is to make sure I don't lose weight as well... Last time I lost ten pounds, but I certainly don't need to lose any more!
