Thanks Dave...now I have a GAHHH.....
But if I have one later...that would make me VERY HAPPY today.
You and I BOTH, mate... I may run down to the local eatery and just SEE if they have a decent Reuben. LAST year, it was rubbish. I hope my strongly worded opinions on it (which ended with me being asked to leave) were taken to heart-for one, you NEVER serve one up COLD. EVER. I DID IT!!!! I GOT MY REUBEN!!! WOOOHOOOO!!!!!!!!!! As did I, actually... Not shaved or shredded corned beef, though... It WAS tasty-homemade thousand island was nice... From a little hole in the wall joint just up from here... That picture inspired me! Oh drat, now both of y'all have me wanting a Reuben. (And I've reverted to using "y'all" as well!) This state of affairs must end! End I say!

"Well, I don't really think that the end can be assessed as of itself as being the end because what does the end feel like? It's like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if the universe is indeed infinite, then how - what does that mean? How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know, is my question to you."

Just as a sort-of aside, isn't it strange (or perhaps not!) that very often it's the little shabby scruffy hole-in-the-wall-type places with plastic chairs and tables that serve the tastiest food? Just a couple of days ago, my wife and I and some Mexican friends ate chicken, rice, coleslaw and tortillas at just such a place on a back street in San Patricio Melaque, Jalisco. Palapa roof supported on rough peeled poles, no walls, dirt floor, only three tables, plastic plates, plastic chairs; and the tastiest grilled marinated chicken I've had in many a year. About $14 for five of us - almost cheaper than cooking at home!.
In the same town there's a fancy-looking restaurant on the main street. We went there last year - food costs twice as much and nowhere near as good, in fact fairly mediocre. We won't be eating there again......

Athanor- I must agree. The quality of the setting very seldom reflects the talent or imagination of the chef. I've also had great food in less than salubrious cafes and been disappointed at more expensive establishments. I find this most often with chinese and indian cuisine- because as a vegetarian it's rare I find exciting food in any 'Traditonal' English establishment regardless of price!
I am happy today because for the first time in ages I have made progress with the mounting pile of University work I have to do- and the first draft of my PhD funding application is nearing completion (wish me luck). I'm also feeling genuinely inspired by my topic of research again and therefore ready to throw myself headlong into my studies. Even the coursework for a module I really didn't enjoy will be tackled with gusto because it will (hopefully) provide me with skills which will later be incredibly useful to my own projects.
I really do love victorian cemeteries- anyone would like I was morbid =P

Lady Ava I'm happy for you that you are planning your next tattoo....don't get me going on how much I miss having tattoos! I've been out of work for best part of five years, and while I've managed well enough, tattoos are one of the things that have had to take a back step. My happy: Marks and Spencer chocolate biscuits, and Bushmills Whiskey for Christmas, both yummy in their own ways.

Got to see The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo today, enjoyed the books and the movie was pretty good too. It actually followed the plot of the book almost completely. More good news being that there is a chance a fourth book might be released.

I haven't read them, but friends who have were worried about the movie being faithful to the original story.

Started off as a completely GAH day. Then in an awful context I ran into my fiance's parents. THEY LIKE ME!!!!! As I have alluded to previously my fiance has problems sometimes and apparently I'm the only person who is able to break through to her in those situations. Been taking steps back lately and looking at the moment in the overall context of my life and I realized that my glass is half full. If it were not for the bad things that have happened in my life, I would not be as stable as I am in situations that now require it. It is one of those weird philosophical problems of reconciling the good with the bad. I kind of feel like Pangloss from Candide.

They made you who you are for a reason-good or ill. Like me, I'm a recovering drug addict, and former gang member. My primary job today is working WITH drug addicts and gang members. Always a reason, mate-even if we don't see it. RE: Glass half full-as I'm Irish, I've got to ask-You going to drink that?

I completed a long-overdue proofread and basic edit of a book yesterday. Due to my full-time job it took me nearly two MONTHS to complete the job. Normally I turn such projects around in a matter of a week or so. It doesn't matter that the work was done for free - it simply should not have taken so long to complete that project.
Another author contacted me a few days ago and offered me a free copy of his latest book as a thank-you for reviews I had done on a couple of his prior books. He even asked about pricing for my proofreading services, and said he's considering using me when his next book is in draft form. Happy, happy day! I'm finally getting a (very) few authors contacting ME for a change. My proofreading side-job doesn't pay much since I don't charge industry rates and I'm a relative unknown to most authors. However, the booming e-book industry, coupled with budding authors that can't afford to pay the sometimes exorbitant rates charged by established editing houses, is slowly resulting in such authors looking for less expensive options like myself.
Many brick-and-mortar proofreading and editing houses start their fees at $0.005 per word and go up from there, just for a very basic proofread often without editing included. Sounds fairly cheap, right? BUT, take a manuscript for a book of roughly 400 pages. The editing houses will estimate the word count at 100,000 using the industry standard word count of 250 words per page. Extend the math and you find that JUST THE PROOFREADING will cost $500. Throw in basic editing services and the cost per word goes up. Drastically. A few authors have told me that they expect to pay up to $2,000 for complete proofreading and editing services. The most I've ever charged for a novel is $250, and that is for proofreading AND editing services.
Sorry, I didn't intend to start a rant. This was intended to be a happy post.
Hopefully I'll have another paying gig soon.

Lovely picnic with those of us in Lincoln who did not go to Corby, and for some odd reason it made me feel a bit more like myself.

Great way to spend the last day of the holiday break. 8+ hours of D&D with friends. I didn't manage to kill any member of the party, but it wasn't for lack of trying. Food and fun was had by all.

Managing to get into uni for 9 and get some work done. I even managed to do work for 2 hours before I gave into the urge to procrastinate and logged into BG- which I feel is pretty good going. I've fixed a map I made before Christmas which was a little unclear and read a lengthy article about GIS techniques.
Of course I'm sure I'll be over in the GAH thread by 5pm with everything gone horribly to pot- but for now I'm happy =]

I am so incredibly jealous. I haven't played a proper game of D&D in far too long. On a happy note, I got the Pathfinder Beginner Box Set for Christmas. I'm hoping to get some friends and family hooked in short order.
