Anybody can start a Gentleman's Challenge. Take a look at the existing one in Tactile (it's stickied) and copy the format of the first post... post it up, pick a deadline and you're away! One of the mods will come along and sticky it once it's up. ~Longeye~

S'ok! Ban is 'female' (or white, fair) & fili is 'poet', in Irish. So Banfili - female poet. It isn't immediately obvious from the avatar, either, which is actually a middle-aged-ish lady with silver hair & glasses!

A little out of date, since this was yesterday, but I was too tired/didn't have time to upload these pics till now... Went hunting for quartz crystals at an old rock club dig site yesterday. Didn't find much, but the trip was certainly interesting. The roads had been fairly passable with 4-WD the first time I went there, unfortunately that was about 4 years ago. This is what they look like now: This road took us way, way up on top of a mountain and then ended without warning. The good thing about this was I was able to find out where we actually were. (By way of 'Oh crap, that's what that little dash on the map meant.' ) The view from the top was stunning though:

Very nice to hear... THAT makes me happy, since I work for a Swine-Farm. I am a mechanologist, I repair/ maintain/ upgrade/ inspect the implements, traction-machines, barn equipment etc. I am always happy to see people enjoying the fruits products of our labours. Please ignore the media when they try to tell us that meat is not good for us. If God himself did not want us to at the animals, .... why would He have made them out of meat in the first place?

Congrats on graduating Cum Laude! That's an amazing feat, I'm still working on getting my grades where I want them, I want to make Dean's List again before I graduate this fall. Today what makes me happy is that my kids are playing "army guys" in the front room while I clean the house. Small victories. Plus it's Friday, and that means that my Captain isn't working tomorrow or the next day.

I'm happy because I get to read a book that inspired HP Lovecraft.
I was looking around the free book section of Google Play and was surprised to find Robert Chamber's The King In Yellow. After downloading it, I wandered over to eBay and took a look for the same book, not really expecting to find it. I was even more surprised to find that it's in print, there are several sellers with copies, and there was a new hardcover in my price range. (There's a 1895 edition for sale that I would have loved to have gotten, but sadly $495 is a bit more than I can afford. Any collectors looking for it, now's your chance!)

I got together with family for a birthday party. My niece told some jokes as part of the gift. She's ten and sort of goofy, and a huge Harry Potter fan.
The best joke by far was: How is Voldemort like a teenaged girl?
1) He wears a dress. 2) He has a pet he adores. 3) He's obsessed with a teenaged boy.

Finally have my grubby mitts on a RASPBERRY PI !! I had the opportunity to get another one if I wanted, but decided to let others at the maker space get in on the action. Besides, this is revision A hardware, with all the associated "quirks" - there is bound to be some important hardware changes coming up in future revisions. Need to pick up a bunch of SD cards and a new USB keyboard, and then I'm all set to get a few projects under way. My initial reaction and experience is quite positive, Linux is quite responsive and web pages load with expected speed given the processor. Naturally I will be adding some cooling and overclocking anyway. Going to have fun with this. SS

Love the look of the Pi.... want one We do, of course, want to see what you come up with! I'm looking at getting into Arduino, does anyone have any tips for that? ;P ~Longeye~ Yes, I do.... DO IT! I use both Arduino (clone) and the MSP430 Launchpad boards, each has their own strengths and weaknesses. The Arduino is easy to start with, there is just sooo much code allready written for it, it really is a matter of 'cut and paste' to get a project working. This also teaches you how to code, in a way that you don't even realize that your learning. There are also lots of existing "shields" (add-on boards) that provide other hardware features like 10 / 100 network, WIFI, storage (SD cards etc), and loads more. Arduino uses a simplified programing IDE based on the 'C' language. Cost is around £25 from most places (+ shipping if ordering online). The MSP430 is a similar device only with less memory and smaller code space, and the board is useable with a range of replaceable chips that each have different capabilities (and mere pennies to buy - or even free as samples!). The code is not too bad to get to grips with for a beginner, but there is not as much available code as the Arduino has - yet. Some of the Arduino hardware shields can be made compatible with the MSP430 with the use of an adapter board, however the arduino code remains incompatible. Also the Launchpad requires you to solder the pin headers to the circuit board yourself ( not as difficult to do as you may think) as it provides two types depending on what you wish to use the board for... If soldering isn't your thing, I'm sure someone here could sort you out. The launchpad uses a real full blown programing suite for writing code - though you only get the limited version for free (as it costs ££££ !), but this not much harder to use than the Arduino IDE. The limited version has more than enough capacity for ALL of the MSP430 chips available that will work with the launchpad board. It's main wining feature is the price - it's damn cheap at only £3.64 (plus shipping of course) link: http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/displayProduct.jsp?sku=1853793&CMP=KNC-GUK-FUK-GEN-LISTINGS&gross_price=trueBoth very useable bits of kit though. I highly recommend getting either one of those boards and having a bit play. If you are not sure it's something you will use, go for the MSP430 - at that price it's worth a punt. To save the cost of shipping, you could order it from RS components for a few pence more (£4.06) as they have trade counters around the country - you could pick it up in person. SS

Mr. Skumins, you've just volunteered yourself to answer my questions I do a lot of programming and have great fun with that, and I've been meaning to branch out and try the hardware/software links... Thank you for the information, I'll look into it and probably buy the cheaper one so I can see if I get on with it! Then blow ALL my money on it ~Longeye~
