Speaking about Evil Lairs.. when you cross the border from Holland into Belgium just south of Maastricht, on the left side of the road is an old abandoned factory of sorts that appears to be specifically designed to be some deranged and evil organization's HQ.. on the chimney they even painted their acronym: S.C.A.R. - I mean, c'mon! That's straight from some cartoon or something!!

I've seen that building! It could be an evil lair. S.C.A.R. isn't that the bad guys company from the cartoon "M.A.S.K"?

Try this place: http://www.opacity.us/ this has been "renewed" since the shot was taken, the best we can get towards saving the areas industrial history until we manage to get a railway museum in Townsville. These are only accessible from the right-of-way or inside the facility. just to the right. from down the street. In fact, best to just look in my folder here http://s85.photobucket.com/albums/k56/thoughtengine/railway/#!cpZZ4QQtppZZ28 it would take too long to put up all the Flinders Street shops pictures.

Nice pictures chironex. Didn't have the guts to go passed the fences? I did some urban exploring this morning. Here as some pictures. There are two buildings near each other. The first is getting demolished, concrete boulders dangling on the reinforced wires. When you look at it a certain way, it seems the boulders are floating in mid air. Second building are cube houses and theatre. A couple of months ago, there was a big fire and destroyed most of the theatre and a few houses. It is also nominated to be demolished. At the first building I had the opportunity to go behind the fence, but I chickened out. Mainly because I was alone. When I would have been with someone else, I would've done it. If Venom was from MASK, Who's S.C.A.R.?I'm pretty shure it was a villain.

Nothing to do with guts... the place is patrolled as it is operational QR National property, only those buildings seem to be derelict, not the whole area; and beyond that is the Port of Townsville. The fences are well maintained and very high, and if I went round the other side I would see more fence, and someone would certainly see me as the sidings there are in use. Off the left side of the picture is the line.
As for the Flinders Street shops, security in there seems to be rubbish, so it is probably full of scavengers and druggies. And asbestos. The ARHS wants to save some sheds from being developed over, so they can have somewhere to service their vintage diesels and stock, but the line doesn't connect to the shops anymore and I don't see how they're going to find the money to do it.

It's a shame. It seems with Urban Exploring you always have two options: Fenced and patrolled or druggies and graffiti. Unless you have the chanse to explore with permission. A couple of years ago buildings were reused or demolished, seldom abandoned. Now with the current economy, you find more places abandoned.

Getting caught PAH!! - it depends on the trespass laws where you are. On this side of the pond (unless you're very silly - and manage to get nabbed in places you shouldn't be (live MoD, Railways etc)) the most that can happen is that you're asked to leave - as trespass is a civil offence NOT a criminal one, its very hard to prove criminal damage (unless you go in "tooled up"). I find the best approach when dealing with security/five O is to say "I'm only taking photos, although you have no right to inspect my camera would you like to see?" - a quick smarm and squirm usually gets you out of trouble! There are many ways into some of the places that you see, its a matter of dedication and stealth to find the right way in!

Derry had 2 amazing factories that have sadly both been converted or have been taken down by fire damage. one of my favourite recent trespasses was on a bridge that has 2 decks and was being sand blasted. the lower deck had been completely tarped off and was filled with scaffolding and black sand, it looked like some sort of hell at sundown and was all pretty impressive . It looked vaguely like that scene in mortal combat when scorpion and cage go to some random place lol

One possible solution: the bluff - Explore only during office hours on weekdays, go in wearing high-visibility safety clothing, wear a hard hat and safety boots. And take a clip board. No one EVER expects a person with a clipboard..

Just soooo sweet dude, love the rails underwater!! it reminds me I have unfinished business back in a particular part of North Wales - If I can ever find a way into the "Lost World" of Grhonwy Quarry I shall be the happiest "Mine Explorer In All Of Christendom" Allah A'kba!!

Revisiting those old buildings near the port, the sidings on the invisible side are apparently being demolished. The formerly disused loop is being used again: About level with where I was standing when I took the shot is where this loop meets the mainline, between those points and the level crossing is a bit that still has bolt-together rails spiked onto wooden sleepers! Those gates are now open and I can see things have happened to those buildings: Perhaps they finally have a use for the land.

Here are some pictures of the defunct Odeon cinema in Glasgow. http://www.flickr.com/photos/8946321@N07/sets/72157630053135809/When built, it was the biggest in the UK, with a single auditorium seating 2,800 people. The facade is to be kept and the rest demolished and infilled with a deeply boring glass office block and shops.

Excellent, if slightly heartbreaking, pictures, Greensteam! PS: sorted out that link for you! THANKS Rather in the nature of abandoned places. All the more saddening cos it was killed of by the nearby Cineworld, which has the highest occupancy rates of any cinema in the country, but there are now plans to build yet another multiplex abou 200 metres up the road.
