So, every year my parents go all out with their Halloween decorating.  This year, since I've gotten them all interested in steampunk, they did a mad scientist bar:

The presents in the corner of the photo are because this was taken at my daughters birthday party.  In keeping with the out mad scientist theme, the theme of the food for this party was "It's Alive!"

I love the cupcake monsters! So simple and yet they really do look like they could start skittering across a plate towards you. Well done.

I think the cupcake monsters and the Frankenstein cookies are great.

Now you just need to convince your parents to keep the steampunk bar all year round - and maybe adjust the rest of the decor to match.  Wink

The bar was actually set up in a tent.  However, I think it has become a permament addition to the Halloween decor.  And truthfully, they do have a room that's done in a "British Raj" style complete with antique furniture, Indian cushions, hidden compartments, and secret passages.  Like many here, they were steampunk before they knew what steampunk was.

recipes, if you got 'em.. I love all things Mad scientist, you know.. It's even in my name.

Let's see:

Nessie is just Oreo Cakesters creatively stacked in a narrow dish and glued with frosting.  Her fins are made from rolled fondant cut in triangles.  Her eyes (and the monster eyes) were a luck find at the grocery store baking section, but could be made with rolled fondant as well.

Frankenstien's Monster: Are rice krispie treats.  I made a icing glaze using 1tsp vanilla, powdered sugar, & water.  You combine the water and powdered sugar in small amounts until you get a gooey consistency.  Add vanilla and green food coloring.  Dip one side of the treats in the icing, coating it well.  Set dipped side up on wax paper or parchment paper and let dry (don't worry if it drips down the sides some).  Then just draw on frank's face with frosting (in this case I used glitter frosting frome the grocery store).

Monster Cupcakes:  They are Key Lime cupcakes and the recipe for them can be found in Zombie Cupcakes (which is just a fun cupcake book anyway).  The frosting is my own faux butter cream.  Start with two softened sticks of butter.  Cream in mixer with 1 tsp of Vanilla, 1/2 tbsp milk, and 1/2 cup powdered sugar.  Add in 1 cup mashmallow fluff.  Keep adding the sugar and the fluff until forms peaks (and if it seems to get too stiff in you  can add in a bit more milk). Mix in food coloring.  I used a star tip and frosting bag to create the fur.  The eyes as mentioned were purchased but could be made from fondant.  The horns were made from fondant by rolling it into long thin logs, cutting it up into horn length bits, and rolling the tips into points.  I also gave them a coat of luster dust to make them shine a little.  The teeth were made the same way but with a thiner, string-like log.

Apple jaws: Take one apple slice and coat one to fleshy sides with carmel.  Place mini-marshmallow teeth on the carmel.  Take another apple slice, put carmel on side of it, and put it carmel side down on top of the teeth.  Put in fridge to let carmel set up.

Monster fingers:  I'm not certain on my mom's exact bread stick recipe (I know her's is spicy jalepeno).  But you can use any breadstick dough (even premade) and add green food coloring.  Shape into fingers.  After baking, press in bits of red bell pepper to form claws.

Brains:  The brain is just jello in brain shaped mold.  My mom found a heart mold in an after Halloween sale, so next year it will be brains and heart!

Simply wonderful =]

The bar looks very well stocked! Although I think I'd have an Igor on hand to taste some of theings first- and then judge how safe they were to drink on the amount of steam coming out of his ears!

I think my favorite food is Nessie- simply because I would have never thought that oreos could be used so creatively!

Well done all round though. I wish my family made such an effort at Halloween! Me and my dad used to make outragous decorations (some of which ended up staying for years) but lately he's not bothered =[
