I start wondering where all these automatons and wei.. ehm, unusual people come from? Or is that a secret?

*Treads on a clockwork scarab beetle carrying a single malt extract glazed peanut.
"No, there are no nibbles here...no meetings. There is quite clearly nothing going on in this room."
*Watches out of the corner of the eye as a single clocktopus tentacle slithers under the tablecloth. Winces slightly. Finally manages to find a lump under the rug with left foot and depresses it.
SQUEAK!
*Smiles weakly.

OUCH! What'd you do that for? *pushes back rug and climbs out trapdoor*
That's the third hat I've smashed this week. *looks around at not so secret crowd*
Why does SHE have unsightly tentacle bruises on her face, what are you doing with that melon baller and where is that perfectly slimey creature think he's going?

Who, me? I'm not going anywhere, I was just putting this completely innocent looking lump-hammer back on the sideboard.
*drops said hammer delicately upon an errant tentacle sliding out from behind the furniture*

*hand instinctively reaches for the lump-hammer again*
Ooooh, yes, isn't he just so cute? Can I hold him for a while...?
*eagerly holds out the hand that isn't tightly gripping the hammer, smiling sweetly*

*looks at Ms Adler's delightful face, noting the bruising brought on by the earlier octopus osculation episode...
*thinks - "some people never learn"
"Ms Adler, would you not prefer a nice cup of tea? Tell me know, I wonder if I know a relative of yours - Irene Adler is her name"

She's no relation, in fact, though I have of course heard of her. Adler is a pretty common name. It means eagle, did you know that?"
*smiles dreamily at her little octopus*
"A cup of tea would be lovely of course!"

"Yes, I did know that Adler was German for 'eagle', I read about it in a naturalists cook book. So, tea, milk or lemon and how many sugars would that be?
And for the octopussy, can I get it something, like a nice, tight fitting tank or Mr.Stange's lump hammer to play with? I say, should it tick like that?"

Milk and two sugars please - oh, really, it's ticking! How adorable!

Yes, of course! Milk and two sugars. I may be a little while, quite a trek to the kitchen you know and the staff are insisting that they don't actually work here - a statement I can easily believe!

Oh look! It tries to communicate I think!

Wasn't that
"I'd like to be, under the sea in a clocktopus's garden, in the shade"?
Or was that a different song?

Hmmm, so the mini-Clocktopusses, Clocktopii - whatever - have appeared after the big one gets pried loose from it's comfy spot in the Private's noggin... and suddenly Miss Adler goes from being almost suffocated in a terrifying tentacle attack, to thinking that they're cute and cuddly pets... just after it was covering her nose...
*leans closer and listens to check if she's ticking yet*
